View Full Version : Scared to no end...

Tomorrow morning at 10am I go to the doctors to have them insert a tube and wire up my nose, into my throat and down into my stomach. it is to test to see how strong my esophagus is and to record the acidic levels that splash up in my esophagus, for 24 hours. This thing will be in me for that long, and I'm really not prepared for this. The tests are pre surgery. The surgery itself will not be till the end of next month. I'm scared... so scared!!! They had to do this when I was in the emergency room after my accident in February and I was even more unprepared for it then.
Please pray that I will just trust in God to give me comfort tomorrow. He has blessed me with so much, including a wonderful boyfriend who has offered to escort me to the hospital while everything is taking place. :) But I am still needing prayer... not feeling so comfortable with this and a little bit miserable.

UPDATE!!!
I went in today to get the tube inserted, and to my surprise they were going to put one in first to test the strength of my esophagus and then take that one out.. and stick another one in for the 24hr test. Unfortunately the first test didn't go so well. My esophagus wasn't really pushing anything down and hardly contracting. i was crying.. along with some other unpleasant things, constantly. He gave me a choice to either put the other one into to see if I can handle it or not do it at all. I chose to not to it at all. One was enough for today, so I'm not sure what is left to happen. My surgeon will hopefully call me next week to tell me what the verdict is and if he still wants me to do the acidic test... but for now... i'm just glad that test is over!!! I'm still recovering from it.. throat is sore and i'm a little under the weather, but doing well. Thank you for your prayers. Continued prayers for the future is welcome. :)

I don't know what was worse. The esophageal motility test or the pH test.
I will say the pH test. I know that does not sound encouraging. :-(
Both tests are really important. One tests the pressure exerted on a catheter as the probe is indexed down the esophagus and will allow the Doctors to measure how well the esophageal muscle groups are doing and take measurement of the length and position of the esophageal sphincter mussel (top of the stomach/bottom of the esophagus. Think valve. Open to eat then it shuts to digest. If the mussel group is shot as mine was, your stomach starts churning and you squish acid/bile/food back up instead of down). That is the take a sip of water and swallow test.
The other of course is pH and outside of just trying to deal with the tube through the nose/down the gulp/gag/gag/gag/ issue they had the nerve to look me square in the face and seriously tell me to eat normally.
You can't. Well, at least I couldn't. I think I lost 5 pounds that 24 hours for not eating. Kinda blew the test that way as I had little reflux. I did chug some orange juice just to watch the readout drop down a couple points.
I hope you have the strength to continue the testing and get the treatment you need.
Strength to you.

Also......
Google: endoscopy
This third test is where they knock you out (thank the Lord) and stick a camera down your gulp and make a movie about your throat, esophagus and stomach. My movie was rated PG-13 and did not have a good ending. Most of my doctors decision came from the results of this test.
If you are really adventurous.....
Google: Laparoscopic Fundoplication Nissen Lap
You see, as you eat you stomach expands. A signal is given off to the brain that you are full and starts the digestive process which closes off the top of the stomach. Well, part of the top of the stomach also constricts (same response) as the sphincter. So, what the doctors do is pull or stretch the esophagus downward just below the penetration of the diaphragm and take the upper portion of the stomach and wrap it around the esophagus and stitch it in place. And there you have it! A new valve!! You get full, the stomach constritcs and the food and acid goes down and not up!!
Night and day difference for me about 6 years ago. It was like someone flipped a switch. **click** no more GERDS.

Ooops. I forgot. One more test.
Live X-ray while drinking a very chalky, poorly flavored Barium (radio opaque) milkshake.
They watch it go down a few times.
It's the coolest thing!

I know this surgery will be the best for my sis. She has been dealing with a grud problem for almost her whole life and then having a Hidle Hernia on top of it. She told me what they need to do. I am going to be there for her as much as I can. I Love her and I pray that the Lord gives the surgens steddy hands. That God will heal her so that she can eat normaly and digest normaly. Please pray for her she is such a trooper. Also pray for her boyfriend so that he can be there as mcuh as possible.

I had a problem with this crap when I was in my early 20s. Had the test where they knock you out and run the camera down your throat. Found out I had a Hiadle Hernia or however it's spelled from gagging so much... Couldn't eat a large breakfast or I would puke half of it back up. Then had the test where they inject this nuclear stuff into your system then you lay still for 30 mins under a camera so they can see if you are producing too much bile. Several different medications, one gave me an ulcer..... etc etc etc. They never found out why I couldn't stop gagging and always had such an upset stomach. Eventually it just went away.. Who knows.

UPDATE!!!!
Thank you all so much for your wonderful prayers and talking about what you have had to go through to. I have had 3 endoscopy's already including the barium swallow radiograph. Both of those test don't bug me to much.. it was just the esophigial muscle test that I could not stand!! The endoscopy is what showed my ulcer that sits at the bottom of my esophagus and showing the parts of my esophagus that have deteriated due to haveing GERD all my life. :(
Anyway, unfortunately I don't get to hear back from my surgeon till the 18th of this month. He decided to go out of town till then. I would like to get my surgery done before school, and hopefully be able to recover easily from it. But it is just not looking like that will get to happen for me. It might happen in september... but as soon as he gets back I will be calling him up and bugging him about it.
Again thank you for everything... just please keep praying... i'm still a nervous wreck!:sick::eek:

So much it isn't even funny. I'm on three different types to try and at least calm down the symptoms.
