Another magic day at Lawrence on Saturday! This is an awsome small lake at the base of Mt. Hood. Electric motors only and NO BAIT- flies and lures only. It can be hard sometimes to get the fish to bite here. They are always plentiful as can be seen by them rising all over the lake. But they are kind of picky little guys.

Started fishing by 6am by myself and trolled a few flies on the surface on the way to the west end- no strikes at all. Switched to lures and got no strikes- so sent the downrigger down to be 3ft. off the bottom and had near instant success. Caught around 15 in the first two hours. Thought I was doing OK- but remembered some previous successes I've had with a yellow woolly bugger, so I went back to just a fly on the end of the line and trolled 3 ft. off the bottom in 10ft to 25 ft. of water. They absolutely loved that fly!!!! I would get a hit/miss or fish on/off or caught every 5 minutes- or LESS! Soon a few others were joining me in that end- but only saw one boat trolling flies on the surface who was slamming them right and left. Don't know what they were using though.

I finally asked this one guy in a small rubber kiyak and a fly rod how the catching was? Nothing he said. I asked him if he had anything yellow- nope. So I motored over and gave him a yellow bugger like mine. He caught a fish in 5 minutes! A half hour later he came paddling furiously back to me- "I had to come thank you for that fly- I just caught a beautiful 18 inch rainbow over there!" He showed me his cell pic of it. Impressive big fish! I have never caught a big fish there- 14inch is my best so far. He continued to catch fish all day- he would just shake his head every time we passed- "I can't believe how well that works".

Gave 2 more flys to a guy and his wife in a canoe who I had been watching not catch anything for awhile. The guy tied one on and caught two fish in 5 minutes! The lady said she lost hers ( no doubt tied a girly knot:D) I tried to give her another but she wouldn't take it. Later she said she used some kind of yellow bass plug and caught a fish with it!

I stuck it out through the heat of the day until about 7pm when I started finding myself turning the downrigger handle in the wrong direction and tighening the drag on my pole instead of loosening it- the brain was drained! Time to give it up. Ended up with a total of 95 trout- 75 of them caught on the same fly- a store bought cheap one BTW- still going strong!

This is not the first time a yellow fly has worked there for me- this makes 4 trips in a row- not just having good fishing- but phenomenal catching 4 times in a row! Did I say YELLOW?

I'll post a couple shots later tonight that I took of an eagle and a heron I saw there. The eagle was impressing people by swooping right down next to their boats trying to grab the fish on their lines. Never saw him steal one but he was big and cool!

Great photos man, really nice. What sorta camera are you shooting?

as for yellow....sounds like that fly was the ticket but by any chance did you try any yellow spinners/spoons? I'm wondering if there is some hatch that you're matching or if those fish are just turned onto the color? any guess?

I was so happy to have non-stop action to keep my mind off the blistering sun that I didn't try any yellow lures of any kind. I was also worried about the wind getting out of hand and ending the fishing at any moment- so I stuck with what was working. I did use a brass Z-Ray spoon in the morning that worked well. It caught a couple of small bulltrout- about 10 inchers - along with some rainbows. As well as the lures worked first thing when I got there, I'm sure adding a yellow component to them would only have helped.

There's a bit of an algae bloom going on there now- not horrendous, but it must cut visibility down some. Maybe yellow just becomes highly visible in those conditions. That doesn't explain why it worked on the previous trips when the water was crystal clear.

Camera is a Canon 20D, 100-400L zoom lens.

Thanks for the hot tip! Laurence Lake is one of my favorites, but I never would have thought to use a yellow fly there. I usually fish black spinners or olive buggers or dark green Teeny leeches. I'll have to make a little trip to the store today...:D

I wonder how busy it'll be this weekend with the Gorge Games going on?

I just got back from there. The campground is packed! Not very many people fishing, though. I couldn't find any yellow flies, so I fished my trusty black spinner. If you go, watch out for the eagle! He tried to steal one of my fish!

I took the family up there for the weekend and found it quite busy as well. Most folks were just camping/partying though and not fishing. Talked to a few folks that had caught some fish, but nothing hot and heavy. I managed to squeeze away for a few hours of fishing while the family was otherwise occupied. We stopped at the Fly Shop in Welches on the way up, but no yellow woolly buggers were to be found. Ended up wind driving a chartreuse and black bugger from west to east during the mid-afternoon. Had a few hits but no hookups. Probably would have had more success if I wasn't trying to keep my 4 year old from dumping the canoe. :) Saw the eagle doing his thing too which was pretty neat.

Got out after dinner again Saturday night and spent it casting caddis drys to rising fish. Landed 4 between 7 - 9 inches and lost a bunch of others. Didn't have to go too far to find rising fish which was nice! The lake was very high, which lead to some fun dry fly action on the submerged willows.

Hit the water about 7:30 am after the kids got up and trolled around the lake again. I was very surprised that I didn't even get a hit as we circled the lake. Again I was trolling a bugger on a full sink line. The boy was using some sort of fish fly that he had picked out at the fly shop and had the same luck.

As the previous poster indicated, the campground was packed. We hiked our gear back from the parking lot aways, but still managed to find a pretty good site. Amazingly it got quiet about 10pm (in observance of "quiet hours"), which I was weary of happening. Pretty sure I won't forget the lyrics to "Sweet Home Alabama" anytime soon though. That seemed to be the favorite song of some of the non-fishing types. :)

Campsites were pretty clean, but we definitely packed out more trash than we brought in. Be sure to do the same!
