We did well with nightcrawlers last week. use VERY SMALL pieces, otherwise they pull them off.

This is what I do and it works good for me. I use a crappie jig with out the skirt. I add about one inch part of a worm then add a SMALL styrafoam bobber about 4 feet above the bait. cast near grass near a point. Keep the worm near the bottom of the lake. now just twitch the bobber every few seconds.
I will be out on Hagg Fri too. If you see me stop by and say hi!

When I was a kid, we always used crappie jigs to get the first perch, then cut him up and use it for bait. We would use plain hooks with a split shot a foot up the line and cut the perch meat into little strips so it would fly/float above the weight as we moved it along the bottom. This "cut bait" always worked better than worms.
I am pretty sure that using game fish as bait like this is illegal in Oregon, but I don't know.

That is not correct. Think of steelhead for example... it's a gamefish and people use steelhead eggs for bait legally all the time. Shad is another gamefish, and dead shad or parts thereof are legally used for sturgeon bait.
Can't use live fish for bait.
Yellow crappie jig tipped with a small piece of night crawler under a slip float. Adjust the float to keep the jig just off the bottom, and fish the edges of weed lines near deeper water. I'll second the perch meat for bait, just tip the jig with it like you would with the worm.:food:

Shad is a game fish? I thought they were introduced so they are kinda like starlings and squaw fish.

********* aka Northern Pikeminnow are native fish, not "introduced". FYI

Not sure why introduced vs native matters here. Anyway, yellow perch are introduced in Oregon as well.

Red areas are introduced and brown areas are native.

Like many here, I like using crappie jigs with plastic grub/squid bodies. When your lure is in their territory they pretty much smash the bait standing still or jigging.

Some guys like to use perch eyes to catch perch. I hear it works quite well.
