I was camping at Loon lake this weekend and caught some nice bass. I am new to bass fishing and have a couple questions. We started early in the morning fishing the bank with plugs around fallen logs, lily pads etc and caught nothing. My bro-in-law made a random cast out to the middle of the lake and hooked a nice 2-3 lb bass. We contined to fish STRUCTURE and still nothing! So I started casting to the middle of the lake and we both started hookin' some nice bass, even hooked one trolling back to the dock(in the middle of the lake) with a small rapala. Any thoughts or ideas why the middle was so hot and the traditional structure spots were not? thanks, Luke

I think the bass could have been feeding on trout. I have seen them do this at Hagg lake. Also lots of time bass will pull of a good peace of cover and suspent in open water. with the warm weather we have been having the water may be cooler out there too. Often when I find a good spot I will cast to open water to check for bass out in open water, it has paid off may times! Good job! Great question!

Also, Largemouth bass (especially big ones) will relate to cover during sumer months, many times, more so than structure. Two entirely different things, cover and structure.
It would bode well for anglers to study a body of water and differentiate between the two. Then once good cover areas are identified, concentrate on them and others like them. Especially when the obvious structure is not producing.
