I was wondering if anyone has any sugguestions on the float between Spray and Service Creek? My father and I are thinking about heading up there to float it with our pontoons. Any sugguestions on camping spots or techniques to fish with would be appreciated.

2 wks ago we fished the whole time with Senko's (small plastics) on spinning rods and dry flies on my fly rod. I used Hopper patterns tossed within a foot of the bank and you can't keep the fish off of them.

The John Day is a lot of fun and I can't wait to go back. Are you guys trying to avoid the couple of rapids, or just doing a one night drift?

We were thinking about doing the day drift a couple times. I have taken my pontoon boat down the owyhee river last year from below the dam down, but my father doesnt have much experience on a pontoon boat. Kinda thinking about avoiding the rapids and staying up high. We were thinking about camping at Muleshoe or Service Creek and doing a one day float a couple times. Anymore info would be great. Not a lot on ifish or the web about this section of water

Not really sure what kind of info you are looking for. It's a pretty flat section of water that runs right alongside the highway. It get's decent pressure from non-boating folks. This section doesn't have the slot limit.

If you are tent camping I would go to Service Creek, if you have an RV than I would use Muleshoe. I don't think either one has hook-ups or running water so come prepared to dry camp.

There's lots of other places along the highway to get a light boat in and out of the water so you can customize the length of your trip pretty easy. Bring two rigs, or a bicycle or motorcycle for the shuttle, or shuttles are available in Spray or Service Creek.
