Fished a slough off of the willy today in my pontoon with a buddy 5am-noon. I believe we both got 5 fish. I got three dinks in the early morning 5am-6am on topwater (LC sammy). Then the bite kinda died off and started working my 4.5 inch red roboworm more. Nailed two quality fat fish. Over 2lbs and under 3lbs. Good fight in them though that was for sure.
My buddy used his senkos to skip under the trees and branches. Got some nice 2-3lbers as well. His last fish was best of the day right around 3lb. Interesting thing were the growths it had. All over the body and lateral line. It looked sick but sure didn't show it in the fight, as well as it's plump belly.
The best catch of the day was my 6'6'' ML shimano rod. As i went to help unhook the last fish my buddy got with pliars, "plop" went my rod off of my toon. I threw a rattle trap on with an 1 oz flippin weight and dragged it on the bottom. My friend did similar with an egg sinker. I ended up hookin it 20-30 min later in the last guide of the rod. I felt very lucky and so relieved!! Saved the day. I will try to post some pictures when i get them off of his camera :D

they were all LM.
but i do have a question hopefully the more wise can answer. my buddy and i both caught a bass which first glance looked like a smallie. then checked again and there were no red eyes, and a very faint lateral line like the LM, but it had a more similar coloring to a sm. my questoins is there a cross between these two. i think i've heard to them as mules. cuz it sure looked like a hybrid between those two. kind like a whiper (white bass and striped bass). anybody second this? obviously there are both lm and sm present in these waters, is it possible?

I have yet to see any "hybrids" but I know people have asked about it before. One thing I can say with out looking at the pics is that just because it didn't have red eyes does not mean it was not a smallie...

Do you see any red in the eyes? But there is no doubt that this is a smallie.
Color variation in fish is not uncommon and considering where you were fishing I'm sure those fish don't see much sun light. How far back did the jaw go?
Oh ya one more thing, POST THE PICS.:D

Flippinbaits; I am a 'foreign' member of this chat room but I am going to retire to Eugene and am a diehard smallmouth fisherman. While fishing the Brazos River in Texas my guide described a hybrid fish called a meanmouth bass. It is a cross between a spotted bass and a smallmouth bass. They are extremely aggressive and lots of fun to catch. I have only caught a few but they do exist. Maybe that is what you caught....lwilling

a chance but i doubt it. for a couple reasons. 1.) there are very very few sm in this slough i fished. 2.) Never have seen or heard of a spot getting caught in these sloughs, are there even spotts in the willy?
it had the lateral line of the LM, i just had to check twice. the fish was a dink so i didn't examine it much. but my guess is it was just an odd colored LM.

There are no spots in the Willy. Or at least none that I have ever heard of.

There are at least a few spots in the Willy. I don't know how they got there but I caught one that was for sure a spot last fall.
