View Full Version : I Don't Understand

Why is it that people get such a nasty response when they reveal that they've kept a bass? From reading the warmwater fish reports from WDFW, Largemouth Bass make up the largest amount of biomass in most Washington lakes. These reports also state that fish are stunted due to poor forage, meaning that the bass are past carrying capacity. Maybe keeping a few isn't so bad then?

Someone might make a post on here stating they kept their personal best fish and sent it to the taxidermist. They are immediately met with a negative response for keeping a fish. Sure, that fish is probably a female that will lay a bunch of eggs. The same thing can be said about that nice 6x6 elk that a hunter takes. That elk is probably the sire of a bunch of calves. No one gets on the hunter for it. Why should we get all angry about someone who keeps a bass? Not an elk, or a bighorn sheep, or a spawning salmon, but a freakin' bass?

I'm thinking people need to get over their sense of entitlement over a bass. No one is entitled to catch that fish. If someone catches one and keeps it, its his perogative. Its not like there is a shortage of them anywhere.

It really does not bother me but most people keep the fish and don't eat them or don't mount them and throw them away I think that is why people get mad..

It's not about that at all. We have hashed and re-hashed this issue here recently and I think that most of us know where everone stands on it. In my opinion, I think everyone here should refrain from saying anything to anyone regarding their decision to keep or not. If everyone has not read JustCallMeDave's sticky note "Welcome to the Bass and Panfish Board", please do so. The title is misleading but it pretty well sums up the way it is and what Ifish will tolerate regarding this issue. So please, let's not have another round where everyone tells everyone where they stand. It's been done to death.

I agree with your Arkansasbasser and the sticky note by JustCallMeDave. However, this thread was posted due to the fact that you find "Gee, you should have let that go so someone else could catch it" comments that you see on EVERY thread where someone admits that they kept a fish. If its still an issue, it should be discussed, not swept under the rug.

If your definition of "troll" is "one with dissenting opinion", then maybe. Seems like that word gets thrown around a lot, wouldn't you say?

I just want to know why, in particular regularity, people are getting snide remarks because they wanted to keep a fish. Not even a fish that is endangered or even hard to find.

I am just starting to get out on the Willy, but I haven't ventured too far from downtown Portland. Seems like I pick one up here and there without finding any concentrations. Maybe I'm not using the right stuff.

I've had a lot of luck above the Bonneville Dam. Cascade Locks has some nice water to fish if you don't get blown off the water.

It's been done to death. There are those that will always make these kind of remarks. If we respond to them everytime, then yes, it will remain an issue. An issue with no resolve. So, let's go fishin and be the bigger person here and let it go. If you ignore them enough they will get tired of making those comments. It's your response that they are after. Don't give it to them.

Back in 94 I caught a 8lb 9 oz largemouth bass in a pond that I taught myself how to fish in when I was a kid. I kept it and it's on my wall now. I felt guilty for a long, long, time. That pond still produces nice bass.
I too have opinions about some of the posts on this board but I keep them to myself because I believe them to be kind of negative and I don't want to create negativity with my posts.
