Need more info in the question really.
Are you talking largemouth in a heavily weeded pond?(Texas rig)
Are you talking smallies in 20+ feet of water in a river?(dropshot)
Are you talking about a large sandy flats?(carolina)
What about splitshot rigs? shakeyhead? weightless?
For the places "I" fish the most often I would say the shakeyhead but since that is not a choice I will go with dropshot.
IMHO no rig is better then another. Each has a place depending on where you are fishing and what the fish are feeding on. It is important to be able to fish them all.:twocents:

1bigfish,
You know your bass....question: is there a diagram of a properly tied drop-shot set-up online anywhere ? I need to learn this setup.
Thanks !

Absolutely, a C-rig just covers so much ground. Why didn't you add shakey head to that list?

I like a Carolina rig for LM, I very rarely fish plastics for SM but I have not been fishing for them very long either. Plastics are always my last resort. Too slow for me.

That last article talks about hook set, and says you shouldn't set the hook in the traditional manner, but rather just start reeling as fast as you can. Is that really the way to do it? It just sounds so odd.

I am not a expert but, unless I am using a circle hook, I set the hook.

It is correct... just worded oddly....
Typically you are fishing drop shot with light test and a fine wire hook, therefore there is no need to drive the hook home as you would with a jig. If you were to, you would probably break off a fair amount of fish. When fishing drop shot, I will simply reel up the slack, and then lift up on the rod (load it up) and the fine wire hook will usually end up right in the top of the fishes mouth....
My :twocents:
Note - I typically use a #2 Gami drop shot hook

That is setting the hook. True it is not like setting the hook like you would with a jig(ie swing for the fences) but the quick lift of the rod tip is still a hook set in my mind.
The way they worded it is more in line for what you would do with a circle hook.
Ryan you do bring up a very important point about dropshot or any "slack line" fishing and is to make sure you take the slack out before trying to set the hook.

Agreed..... just a different type of hookset... almost every different technique we use requires a different hook set, be it drop shot, jig, crankbait (both lipped and lipless are slightly different), spinnerbait, topwater, etc...
And I have to say, there is nothing like getting a good hook set with a jig (with a spinnerbait being a close second), especially on a bigger fish..... gotta love swinging for the fences....

The wacky rig is very good too and I would have voted for that if it was in the poll.

Drop shot for sure. I have caught many many big bass on this technique, both LM and SM. When I am dropshoting I ussually like a #2 gamakatsu splitshot/dropshot hook and a 4in Roboworm. The weight depends on the depth im fishing (deeper, 20ft-45ft-3/8oz cannon ball weght. shalower, 5ft-19ft 1/4oz cannon ball weght.)
