First off I fish on the hook very little, so my knowledge is limited. Was out last Sat and wanted to anchor up to try some kwicks for Salmon up by John Day Dam. Anyway there were 3 other boats on the hook and none of them were swaying like I was . Constant fishtailing of 8/10 feet each way. Yes current was strong, but was the same for the other boats. Needed info....21' NW JET semi-hardtop... 18' water 40 lb river anchor. let out about 40 more feet of line after hitting bottom, then XL size ball, then 15' more line. tried boat pulled up closer to ball and farther away, made no difference....Thanks for any help >>>Jack

In 18 foot of fast moving water I would let out 150' of rope, let your bouy out, then let out another 15-20ft of rope. Then throw a sock off the back of your boat, it will keep you from moving so much. A top on your boat will make you move side to side a lot more than other open boats. Try opening up your windshield to let the air flow.

98Ramtough has it right. You were anchored very short for the conditions you described.

Use a sock off each corner.:twocents:

:yeahthat: Put out a couple of sea anchors/socks at the back corners of the boat. If it's a jet, they tend to have a flatter bottom that gets blown around more. I have an outboard main motor but I will also lower the kicker motor to help keep me straight.

:yeahthat: Also, make sure you're socks are big enough for the boat. I have a 20' with full hard top and I was all over the place with 2 socks until I got the right sized ones. Good Luck!

You can also lower your kicker and use it to help steer you straight or to help you "sheer" from side to side.

the kicker trick works great...irritating but works great when all other options fail..I sometimes fish seams on the big c that is swirly and the socks don't work..time for the kicker
A trick I don't see to many fisherman use is tie a rope to the small hole at the small end of your sock then tie it to the end of the main rope at the boat leave some slack so it doesn't affect the sock but when you pull it in use the rope tied to the small end the sock will collapse and you don't have to work so hard pulling it in:meme:

:yeahthat: I keep a small diameter rode (1/8") on the end of the socks and it comes up easy, and much faster when a hot fish is on. I also have two sizes of each sock, depending on conditions.
Usually, I'll tie the anchors off at my window cleats so the anchors are just a few feet behind the boat when deployed, with the trailer lines attached on the stern cleats, with abit of slack. Seems to work......
