The prop on my 8hp Merc is in need of a paint job. Some will say to just use it as is; but I like to have things looking right. There is little of the original black paint left just some spots of paint and a dull aluminum look to most of the prop. What's the best "do-it-yourself method? I plan on stripping it down to the base material, using a primer, then a fresh coat of paint. Any suggestions on whether this is the correct method and what type paint to use?

Hit it with polyurethane canned spray paint and call it good.

Not that I'd necessarily take the time myself, but Ampro in Clackamas or one of the other prop repair places know the repainting process well and might even share it with you. Back when I had a Mercruiser outdrive, I had Ampro repair my props after inevitable dings that occur, for considerably lower than the cost of a new one. (They also repitched one for me so I had one for skiing and another for longer distance cruising.)

Black spray paint is what I use for touch up.:twocents:

Thanks for the advice. We'll see if the Do It Yourself method holds up.

The factory no doubt powder coats them, spray paint will need touch up every season or so, but it just takes a couple minutes. You should be taking the prop off to check for fishing line behind it anyway.

Mercury has a black propellor paint. It is quicksilver brand. They have several colors.

GiJoes sells it (it will always be GiJoes in my book)
