View Full Version : My nightmare!

My "new to me boat" is still sitting on the trailer after 4 weeks because I can not find another steering cable anywhere! The prolem is it's a Moorse cable (#E47948) and they are no longer in business. :passout: The cable is only 72" long. It runs from the sterndrives through the transom with the OMC transom ball then connects to a hydraulic cylinder inside the engine compartment. From what I understand this was a factory set-up on some Fiberforms. The only solution any of the repair places have is to rip out the $4,000 worth of hydraulic steering and install the old cable steering on the bridge and in the cabin. Anyone else have any ideas? I've checked with most boat repair facilitys in Salem and Portland, the few boat scrap yards that I know of, and every place on the internet (100 +). Any help is greatly appreciated, Mike

Are there any adapters you can get to adapt a teleflex cable to it ?
What is the make and model # of your helm ?

There is a place out by the airport that makes custom cables. Do a search, someone had a throttle cable made last year they couldn't find anywhere else.

I had a custom cable made for a motorcycle once. I think it cost me about $20. I'd look into it if I were you.

Custom is by far the easiest and typically cheapest route. Just find a local shop that has the capability.

I went to the shop off of marine drive that makes cables and they told me there was nothing they could do. I haven't tried Island marine yet but I will check them first thing in the morning! Teleflex does not make any kind of adapter for it that I or any of the shops have figured out. Thanks for any ideas and keep them coming. Mike

I own a machine shop, if there's something I can build that will help you out, let me know. I don't do cables but I might be able to help with an adapter. I want to see you on the water. TUNA are just about here. I have an open seat for you if you can't get on the water in time.

Hello Tip-Sea - I don't know if this would help you out at all, but you might want to check into it. Maybe you could shorten it or something? Ken

I'd start calling around places in Seattle -- many more boats and many more boat shops up there.. Check out www.secondwave.cc (http://www.secondwave.cc) and give them a call -- they're a used marine equipment consignment store. Seattle Marine seems to have Morse products and cables -- www.seattlemarine.net (http://www.seattlemarine.net).
Hope this helps.

hello, the name of the company that makes custom cables is Instument sales and serivce ( isspro ) they're on airport way in portland.
503-239-0754. you should bring the cable to them that way there is no misunderstandings.
There are 72" control cables out there made by Morse. For instance, the 6' 33B/33C Morse/Teleflex. I assume the ends screw on/off your existing cable. 10-32 threads, 3" travel? then these cables should work.
Call go2marine and Seattle Marine.

Keep the suggestions coming. Nothing yet. Seattle marine says they have not seen the cable for years and had no idea how to help. Go2marine has been working on it for about a week (Great customer service). I'm going to check Isspro right now thanks for the tip. The ends of my cable do not come off or you would be right orca it would be a pretty simple fix. Also those control cables are pretty thin and I'm pushing dual outdrives! I'm going to go try the latest suggestions thanks for the help!!! :applause:

My boat actually has dual helm Wagner hydraulic steering. The problem is it still connects to a cable. The cable runs from the sterndrives through the transom then connects to the hydraulic cylinder in the engine compartment. I can not hook the cylider directly to the sterndrives like an outboard set-up because it would be below the water line.

There is an adapter to allow a new style cable to hook up to it. 284.00 available locally thru US Distributing. A dealer will have to order it for you.

Tip-Sea,
It seems to me you could get a cable made the right length with a threaded rod on it. Then take the old one and new cable to Irish Pennant's machine shop, with the new one a machine shop could probably make just about any end on it you need they may even be able to cut the old ends off tap them and attach to the new cables if not I am sure a machine shop could make something to work. If the parts are not available that seems like your best bet.

I will bet the ends are silvered solidered on which means with a small amount of heat they will come off Then get a new cable & have them replaced.:twocents:
