View Full Version : T-8 idling rough & high

Just after my T-8 hit 100 hours it started running rough. Idle jumped up to ~1250 rpm and very rough. Also hesitates and bogs a bit when I hit the throttle, motor starts just like always.
I did catch a big clump of floating weeds in the prop trolling the willy, but the telltale is as strong as brand new so I don't think my water pump was damaged.
Anyways, I did the 100 hour maintenance all except for a fuel filter, which I will do this week. Haven't been using the motor since, waiting to get it in the shop, but that is proving to be a long wait.
Any ideas?

Carb has debris in it. Mine acted the same way till I had the card serviced.

restricted delivery in the carb will change the fuel to air ratio and cause it to become leaner with a higher idle ...
As far as running rough when you changed the plugs did you leave a plug wire loose ???

I have issues with mine every year and it is ALWAYS the carb getting junk in it in some way shape or form. Clean the carb and presto!! not hard to do either.

Thanks guys. Haven't changed the plugs yet for the 100 hours.
Will check the carb. This may save a trip to the shop.

You can either buy the plug from the boat place or I picked up a plug from autozone. Different number put the reference thingie they have said it was the same plug. works great and was only like 2.50$ vs. the 7-10 from the boat place.

Any carb cleaner in particular ?

Just wondering if there is a good one for Outboards.

Well, I pulled the carb off and wasn't exactly sure what to clean. I removed the plate on top and sprayed out the recesses underneath as well as the throat (?) where the choke and throttle valve are.
But the problem still remains. carb & choke cleaner and then compressed air from a can, the kind for cleaning keyboards.
Do I need to pull off the float bowl? Anything to be carefull of in there?
Sorry for all the questions, but I've never cleaned a carburateur and thins motor cost a lot of $$$.
Thanks

Get a manual on your motor first ...
Yes the problems lie in the dreaded , float bowl (enter spooky movie music) ...
You need to remove the bowl carefully remove the float and needle valve and both jets and blow out passages with at least 60-80psi compressed air ...
inspect all jets and clean if needed also look for gummy deposits on needle valve seat ...

If you don't have any idea how a carb works leave it to a professional to do ... :twocents:

A good point to take it to a shop imo.

You tried the simple stuff.

Has anyone every noticed when you change the oil that it is white at the very end. What does that mean? Has the oil broken down?

I use the stuff you can't buy anymore. I Take it all apart, float bowl remove anything rubber or plastic, remove all jets let it soak for about 20 minutes (don't let the floats soak, the stuff I use will eat plastic and rubber) take it out blow it out with air compressor, reassemble and ur done.
