Lake fishing can be a lot of fun. Sometimes it isn't much more than kicking trolling in a tube or wind trolling in a boat.

Lines are important as in lakes getting the fly to the right depth is everything. Last summer on a hot day I wasn't getting anything and then I used the depth finder to find water that was 6 feet deeper and we caught 8 fish in the last hour.

I agree that Buggers are probably the best all around pattern. Don't be afraid to hang a second fly, a P.Tail or Hares Ear maybe, off the Bugger.

Orange works well too...that dark orange. Fish close to the bank...put your boat/pontoon out a ways, then cast towards the bank. They troll along the bank where the bugs are crawling out and hatching...that's been our experience. PLUS...fish different zones until you find where they are at. Or there's always the weedbeds but you have to be careful there because if you hook into one, they try their best to get into the beds where its fairly easy to lose em. I LOVE flyfishing. Enjoy, Sand

Fly fishing lakes can be very easy and also put the most experienced fly angler in stitches. Weather conditions play a big part in how to catch fish. Depth and cover, high pressure and low pressure systems can be big factors on how you approach the fish or present your fly. It is always good to know the topography of the lake so you know where shelfs and cover can be found. Keep in mind that there is alot going on under water that you don't see and you may see fish rise but can't see bugs. Coronomids, scuds, midges are usually always present but not alway fun. You can't go wrong with a pheasant tail and always have several sizes. Ask your local fly shops what is happening, they are always willing to sell you something. If you want to troll a fly thats great and easy way to do it. If you want to fly fish on the other hand do a little research on the lake you want to fish. I don't want to sound like a purist and I am not a total purist, I've trolled buggers. Once you figure these other things out it will be much easier and you can leave your trolling gear at home. Hire a guide or better yet go out with one of us ifishers and we will be happy to help you out. It's always nice to see someone interested in fly fishing.
