View Full Version : Matching Lure and Dodger Colors...

I have read that some tackle manufactures recommend going with a dodger the same color as the lure while kokanee fishing, and just wondered how many of you go with this way of thinking? I can see maybe sticking with certain colors that will show better than others as you drop down the water column, but I myself have never seen a difference in catch rate keeping the colors exactly the same. I do go by the line of thought that contrast in your presentation makes a difference, having circles or stripes on a lure or dodger I believe triggers a response of aggression in fish. Have you experimented with this? If so, have you noticed a difference? In your opinion, is your catch rate better keeping everything the same, or mixing it up?

I always match my lure color to my dodger. If I have a red dodger I use a red lure, or if I have a solid silver dodger my spinners will have silver blades, any color will work as long as it has silver blades.
Also I agree that contrast is a must for a kokanee lure, I never use a solid color lure. My day usually starts out with my spinner having big contrasting colors like solid chartreuse and black. Then as the sun rises I switch to a more subtle contrast.
The same holds true for fishing deep, the deeper I go the more contrast I add to my spinner.
I actually consider the contrast of my spinners to be more important the just color, for example some times dark green and dark red will be working great when light green and light red will hardly get a bump.

I try to match when I go out in public...
and I ALWAYS match my dodger to lure.
Have you seen that show on TLC...."What not to wear?"
They're coming out with a NEW SHOW called...
"What not to fish"

What exactly is the reasoning behind keeping the lure and dodger colors the same? Is it that the dodger color (and vibration) attracts the kokanee, and the trailing lure being the same color is a match for what brought the fish to your set-up in the first place? Is this the theory behind matching the colors? I use a watermelon dodger with all colors of lures and do pretty well, but will try matching colors to see if my catch rate improves, and will post results.

:yeahthat: I started last season to match lure color and dodger color the best I could. I think it helped, but without having a control out the other side of the boat, it is purely speculation on my part. The water melon dodger is one of my favorites because it has multiple colors and lots of contrast. Last year my number one set-up was an orange wild thing dodger with an orange hoochie.
