Had a friend of mine call me yesterday that was very distraut about a health report he got regarding his wife. Last month she was diagnosed with stage one emphezema after complaining she had trouble breathing. She went back to the doctor yesterday and in just one month she had advance to stage two as my friend explained it.

This is going to be a bit tough on these two as they have smoked most of their lives and we all know the trama of trying to kick that habit. But it is a matter of life or death for these friends. They have to quit cold turkey period and this will be a huge challenge in itself.

Pray for these two and that the emphazema does not advance any further.

thank you bman. he is talking about my wife diana. i was going to post yesterday, but got to busy with other things. the pharmacy was busy so i had to wait ther for over an hour. and then when i got home my wife and i talked alot about what we need to do and about our future. its funny that you dont think about a will or life insurance untill something like this happens. hopefully we wont need any of those things any time soon, but those are important things to think of. diana is resting very well today with the meds her doctor gave her. we will know more in a week or so. thanks again bman for the shoulder to cry on yesterday. i needed that. i will post more info as it comes. thank you all so much. greg schwindt.

Greg: This will not be easy for you and your wife. My son Mike, just lost his lower jaw and tongue to cancer caused by smoking. His wife refuses to quit. I did a lot of research and there is a lot of support out there for people wanting to kick the habit. If it becomes too much of a burden, pm me and I will send you some locations I found that are dedicated to helping.

There are a lot people that live reasonably active lives with emphysema. As sure as you are right now about quitting smoking, it will cross your mind not to. I have heard from my patients before, "why quit now the damage is done". The quality of your life will be directly effected by wether you quit or talk yourself into smoking. Good luck. Ask your Doc for some help with quitting.

I recommend to my patients to get a pnuemonia vaccine. You get the first one and 7 years later you get a booster. Two total in your lifetime.

Lots of debate on how effective flu shots are, but I would not gamble. Get one every fall, consider a booster in January.

Any thickening of sputum, fevers, increasing shortness of breath call your Doc. If you get behind on this you will probably end up in the hospital. Your goal should be not to land in the hospital. You can catch a bug in the hospital............. You just don't want to be in the hospital.

Avoid people that are ill, coughing and sneezing. When the flu bug hits your community stay home.

There are a fair number of good meds that hit the market in the past few years. That is good news. If you do not think your Doc is paying enough attention get a second opinion.

Sorry to hear about your wife's diagnosis. Here is a link to some smoking cessation stuff. Maybe you will find some if it useful.
