I am looking to plan a trip down there and have been doing some research but figured I'd look to my brothers on the board for some help.
What I would like to know is:
1) Best place to fish (Rome?)
2) I know you can raft it but can I take my drift boat?
3) Best spot to camp?
4) Best time of year to go
5) Bug reccomendations?
6) How long to get there?
Having seen some pics on this river on the board as of recent (hero shot gone bad) I have revived my thirst to fish some new water in Oregon.
Thanks in advance guys...
Question;
Do you tent camp?
Is it Owyhee Lake or Owyhee river you are interested in?
Good Luck;

If you want big Browns, below the Dam is where you want to go, plenty of primmitive Camping right on the River. didn't see any Rafts or Drift Boats, lot's of Guys/Gals in Waders tho, I heard Scuds were working well back in early May, & is a good time of year also.

Just got back yesterday from Rome to Birch Creek. Beautiful scenery. 1st time down this river. It is a trickier float than advertised. Fishing was OK. Water was a little off color. Tons of bass. All 10 inches long. None bigger some smaller. What suprised me was the Catfish. Tons of them. They were good river fair for sure. We only saw two trout. One about 10" my brother caught and I lost one at the raft about 16" long. As far as drift boat, look at last photo, wouldn't do it. this was one of out parties raft. It took a good hour and a lot of head scratching to get this one unstuck. Everyone was ok. The only fly fishing I would think is big black Nymphs. Didn't see to many rising.

You need to fish the fist ten miles below the dam for huge trout. Google Boise Idaho fly shops for up to date info on hot flies. As far as I know, nobody floats that section of river. The road paralels the entire river, lots of accsess. good luck and tight lines.

yep, for trout, fish below the dam. It's a wade and bank fishery, not a float. Great wading, easy stuff. Scuds, small princes, BH P/T's, black hairs ears,.
Some great Brown trout, and about 10$ bows. My largest bow on a dry came from there a few years ago. 24". I'll be there in july, can't wait!
Have fun.

Thanks for all the info guys! I am planning to tent camp and it soundslike there is pleatny of places to do that. With ample river access by road I will go after the toads below the dam. I appreciate all the info and where to look. Now I just have to find the date!
