View Full Version : Where could I take Gramma?

My husband's grandma is 92, nearly blind and deaf. I would LOVE to get her into a trout, even a little one. I think it would bring her a lot of joy.
I don't know where to take her, though. We live in Willamina, and even I can't seem to catch anything at our local ponds. Are there any trout ponds around Salem or McMinnville, even Lincoln City, where I could take her so that she would nearly be guaranteed a fish?
Also, regarding her license... I know she could get a Pioneer's license, but it seems like it might be more hassle than it's worth. If I'm only going to take her out once or twice a year, is there a special one-day license for seniors or handicapped individuals?
Thanks for any input. I would really like to do this for her.

Free fishing day this Saturday and Sunday.
I thought about that, but we have family commitments all weekend.
Sunday is a slight possibility, but where? She'd be happy if she caught an old shoe, but I would like her to catch something she can keep.

I would just get her a one day license, and I would love to help her and you at the Canby Pond. I wasn't able to get my grandma of 96 out before she passed this last Christmas.

I wonder if in this case another good bet might be a trout farm, Melissa. Horning's Hideout is on hwy 26 west of Portland. I don't have any personal experience with it but it would probably guarantee Gramma a fish. Here's a thread off ifish which might help you out a little. Wherever you wind up best of luck to Gramma! :flowered:

I was thinking trout pond, too. I wonder if there's one closer? There's got to be one around Salem, somewhere.
PS- Did you change it to "Grammar," or is someone else messing with me?

Thank you for the offer. If I can't find a local trout pond, I might just take you up on that.

Whoops! I think that's the result of a spell-check. Either that or rimrock is lurking somewhere around here.

Are you getting bites at your local pond? These Trout are sometimes not so easy to catch. I can walk you through several methods that produce, when no one else is getting action.

Too funny. I thought someone was trying to tell me I should take grammar, since I can't spell "grandma" right. :)

Well, no, I am not getting bites at my local ponds- Sheridan or Huddleston. Part of the problem is that there apparently are people who don't have two toddlers to chase all day. So, instead, they chase the trout truck (driven by Twitch's Tackle), and catch 'em right out of the chute.
I used to do just fine catching planters when I lived near Coffenbury Lake. These little valley ponds have not been so kind to me. I've tried the same methods I used at Coffenbury, but there is a lot more grass here. I know that I could catch one or two on a fly from my float tube, but I would look really out of place doing so.
I will keep trying to catch something out of the ponds here, but I will probably take Gramma to a pay-to-fish trout pond so that she has a good shot at catching something.
Is Canby Pond a privately run place? I've caught bits and pieces about it, but am not really familiar with it.

Are you using powerbait on the bottom? Chaurtruse is the color to start with. Use an 1/8 or 1/4 Oz sliding egg sinker above a small swivel. Use 2-3 ft of very light leader, attach a small egg hook. I use the nuggets, but a small marshmallow size gob of the paste covering the hook will do. When casting, be immediatly ready for nibbles while its sinking. Let them eat it all. No hook set, just real when they load up the pole.
If you dont get a bite within a few minutes move it a few feet. Leave slack in the line, so yo can notice the action, without spooking the fish. Csat often as this attracts them. They like to eat especially at 9AM and again around 4 pm.
If they steal you bait often, switch to power eggs, which they cant steal.
And if they are biting light switch back to paste.
The Canby Pond is public, and not too noticed yet. There is a paved flat area with a railing. I imagine part of the thrill for her will be holding the pole while getting a bite.
Gulp eggs in pink are hot, but expensive, I often find mine at Freddies on clearance.
I am very interested in helping in any way I can, lets get it done. She needs a fish!

Mitch-
I have done ALL of the above, to no avail. :passout: It's really pathetic, but I'm not giving up yet. If I had more free time, I'm sure I could get into them. But, I don't, and when I take the kids down there, my son just heads straight into the water.
Twitch-
I will talk to my in-laws (who take care of her), and get back to you. Maybe we will see you Sunday.:)

If you want to take Gramma for a little drive, try Hebo lake. It offers a few easy access spots and produces pretty good.

The Canby pond has a playground nearby, and I could assist with either gramma or watch the toddler for you.
Don't give up on the fish, either they are biting right away, or very hard to entice.
And like Steelheading, if just one small factor is missing, and they wont bite.
My friends have come down to the pond thinking it was so easy, only to call me and ask for help after hours of no action. Within a few minutes of instruction, fish on!
I know fishing next to a federal prison with the truck chasing crowd, is not much fun.
The fishing will get much better this afternoon. Hint Hint. Splish Splash...

Looked up reference to Walter Wirth Lake in the "Osprey -1, Gentlemen - 0" line using the "Fishing in Oregon" book (great book, by the way). It says it is a trout, bass and panfish lake on the east edge of Salem, fed by Mill Creek and within the Cascade Gateway Park, west of I-5 at its junction with Hwy. 22 (reachable from either the airport road or Turner Road). Includes largemouth bass, white crappie, brown bullhead, and bluegill as well as stocked legal rainbows and an occasional brood trout. In particular, it says it is recommended for youngsters and is wheelchair accessible, which would seem to make it ideal for grandmas as well, to my way of thinking.
Also, for whatever it's worth, I think the $12 annual fee for her would be well worth the money rather than chancing a larger fine at some point--that would sure ruin the day.
Happy fishing, and bless you for wanting to take her.

:yeahthat: This place is close to salem if not right off of I-5. I have caught fish plunking powerbait, under a bobber, even on spinners. With them planting another 2250 there your chances could be high. just my :twocents: good luck and dress warm doesn't look to be warm weather any time soon.
