I have a 15 hp Evinrude. The other day I launched the boat, started the motor and took off. I got maybe 1/4 mile and it just shut down. I tried to start it again and it acted like it wanted to but wouldn't. Now it won't even act like it wants to. Where should I start looking to find out what's wrong. I don't have the money right now to drop it off and tell them to fix it. I would like to give it a go if it's within my means, but I dont even know where to start. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Bill

Are you running it on a portable tank? If so check the vent to make sure it is open. Been there done that before. Also if this is the first time out this year check the filter and the carb for gunk. It is either fuel or spark and my guess is fuel or rather lack of.

make sure the arrow is pointing the right way on the fuel line bulb if using a portable tank.

Like Chrome Bumper says. It's either fuel or spark. If your plugs wet it's probably spark(does that sound too nasty?). Might check the kill/switch lanyard if it has one. Sounds more like a fuel issue where it ran awhile then quit.

I had a mid 80's 15hp Evinrude, it just quit one day. Took it into the shop, turned out to be an electrical part (don't remember, think it was a condenser ?). It wasn't an expensive part and I was out running the next day. It isn't always a plug or fuel, it could be the electronic ignition or along those lines. But always check the obvious first!
With a small engine like the 15hp Evinrude, it is important to run the gas out of the carburetor when you quit for the day. Drain it or run it out until the Carburetor is empty. It will prevent a lot of trouble.
This may not be your trouble but it is still something that should be done every time you quit for the day.
Good Luck

Thanks, Okie. I have always done that and have never had carburetor problems. When this motor shut down, It felt like it was in a bind. Like something had wrapped around the prop and choked it down but that wasn't the case. Oh well, will get into it this weekend. Thanks to all who replied to this post. I appreciate it. Bill

Hi
The first thing I would do is replace the spark plugs, regardless of what they look like. There two cheap to be wondering if its the plugs when your investigating a possible fuel problem as to why it won't run
Once the plugs are replaced use some starting fluid to see if it will run.
This 5 minutes of troubleshooting can save you hours of wondering.
If it won't fire on new plugs and starting fluid than you have bad ignition components. (Coil,Condensor,Etc)
If it will fire and than die immediatly you know that most likely you have a fuel problem
Start looking for plugged line, bad fittings,Tank etc.
Good luck

Thank you. I am getting fire to the plugs and I now know that the gas is moving up to the carb. The screen is clean. I am pretty sure now that it must be that the needle is not coming down in the bowl and letting gas in. I will remove carb today and see. Wish me luck. Thanks again for the advise. Bill
Look for an air leak. Could be in the gas line.
