SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. Fished around Maupin today. We caught a few but fishing continues to be slow...at least for us. Plenty of bugs around but the fish are not keying on them. All of my fish came on size 6-8 nymphs. My pardner stuck to dry fly fishing and managed a couple on some mayfly paterns. Tough day;-)

Slow and Low:
How is the wading conditions? I heard that you are fishing where you would normally be wading. Does the river seem to be on the drop? Sounds like fishing was tough. I'm planning on going next week -- hope they are keyed in on the 'bugs' by then.

Wading is tight against the bank and so is most of the fishing. The river isn't on the drop yet. I'll be back out Sunday Monday as well. Tight lines.

I had similar results out there last Saturday....mostly small fish and not many were caught on top. I managed to catch a couple up top on caddis patterns mid day, but it was tough sledding for the most part. I saw a few sippers but there is so much variety on the water right now it's no easy task to figure out what they want in any given area at any given time. I saw salmonflies, golden stones, little sallies, BWOs, PMDs, PEDs, Green Drakes (one), craneflies, midges, and several types of caddis. With the White River being blown out, crowds were thick around Maupin.

Any tips on where I can take him to throw his flys.

For Shad, try the Columbia below Bonneville Dam.

I can't offer a whole lot of other suggestions for this weekend as the water is pretty high in most drainages, except maybe the coast range. You can maybe try the Deschutes but they just raised the river level yesterday (it was already high to begin with) so it may not fish very well this weekend.
