saturday i went to oswego creek at mid day to try to catch my first crappie. i don't know much about crappie. i had a canoe. i paddled around trees and saw schools of crappie. they were right at the surface sitting in the sun. as soon as my lure hit the water they scattered. i was using a size 10 or smaller worm hook with a tiny little yellow grub (no weight or bobber, i didn't want to scare them away). i also tried fly fishing but that scarred them off real quick. i ended up with 5 on the little grub. was i doing something wrong? is it a bad time of year or day to fish for them? when and where are they feeding. it didn't look like they were feeding to me but i don't know much. should i try a different lure.

Where were you fishing? Where is Oswego Creek? Does it come out of Lake Oswego? It sounds like you were doing everything right to me.:excited: How big were the crappie? :thisbig:I usually use a 1/16 oz. jig or a 1/8 oz. with a salted skirt. I like the chart/glitter the best. Green and white or the red and white work well also. You could see the crappie? How deep was the water?
My experience this time of year is that the crappie are usually deep. As the water warms they move into the shallows to spawn. We usually catch them this time of year in up to 30 ft. of water.:twocents: Fishrite

oswego creek comes out of lake oswego and goes into the willamette. the water was really high. some of the fish were at the surface where the water is about 10-15 feet but most were in a small pond connected to the creek because of the high water. these fish were at the surface of about 6-7 feet of water. i didn't use a weighted jig head because i wanted it to stay at the surface and because it would scare the fish. do you think there are other fish feeding in deeper spots or do they all stay together? thanks

Lots of time if you see crappie in the brush and on top of the water there more crappie down the water collum! Do not worry about spooking some. Use a flaot and let it sit for a few second then give it soft twitched every few seconds.
Good luck!

I agree -- use a float and set the jig at the depth you want. After a few seconds move it ever so slightly. The crappie will hit it sitting still sometimes. Fishrite

are you sure it was schools of crappie not bluegill because there are a ton of them in there.
