Hey guys,

I am a fly guy and have floated the John Day several times for smallies and had a blast. I am looking to find some good smallie water fairly close to Portland and figured I'd ask the experts. If someone had a half day to head out after smallies where would they go?

Your input is extremely appreciated and if you need to do it via PM I understand. If any of you ever need the favor returned when you are looking to chase metalheads, cutties, or salmon let em know!

Bank, boat, or toon?

I was thinking of taking what ever it takes to get the job done. I have all three. Preferably the drifter.

fish the willamette. Read up in the section about what people use for smallies as far as plastics and cranks, then immitate it with a fly. I tie a lot of buggers and streamers for willie smallies. White is a good color during the spawn which is basically right now (when the water cooperates). you can strip steamers or put them under an incator near rock structure; the bass like to hit the fly when its on the way down if you using an indicator. But if you just kind of fish the willamette for bass like you would anywhere else for trout; I think you will have good results. There are tons of smallies in town. good luck!
