I am thinking about getting a bamboo rod. I prefer med-fast action or slower, 9 foot 5 wts. Any suggestions as to what to look for, makes, lengths, etc. I have fly fished fiberglass and graphite for decades, but know nothing regarding bamboo. Thank you in advance for input.

If you want to learn about bamboo rods I'd suggest several things:

-check out the Metolius Bamboo Rod Fair at Camp Sherman. It's an annual event that attracts rod makers and collectors from all over the world. This year it will be held on July 19 & 20 at Camp Sherman.

-Google up The Classic Fly Rod Forum (it's on Yuko). Similar format as iFISH but entirely devoted to classic tackle, esp. bamboo rods. Browse the forums, ask questions, and see what's posted for sale. Very knowledgeable group and prices on tackle are fair.

-Find some local rod makers and pay them a visit. I know there are some good ones in the Portland area.

I'd suggest keeping an open mind on rod length and weight until you've had a chance to cast a few. They tend to be heavier than modern rods; you may find a 9-ft. 5-wt. bamboo rod doesn't have the same feel and casting characteristics as you're expecting. Personally, if I was looking for a bamboo trout rod I'd start trying out some 7.5-ft.--8.5-ft. 4 and 5 wts., and likely go for an 8 ft.

good luck with it.....Mike

Thanks Mike. I checked out the website. I'm confused about the nomenclature. What does 8' 2/2 #5 mean? I know 8 foot and 5 weight, but what does the 2/2 represent? Thank you?

I'm no bamboo expert, but I believe 2/2 means a two piece with two tips (ie. a 2 piece rod that comes with an extra tip)

That's what it means.

I'd take a hard look at some of the 7.5 and 8' 5 wts. out there. Mine is an 8' 5/6 built on a blank by Mike Brooks. I like it with a DT5 which makes it a little faster than what I normally prefer but it just feels right. As far as builders, check out Mike Brooks, AJ Thramer...& definitely plan on hitting the bamboo rod gathering on the Metolius. I'm going to try to make it down there.
good luck!!
