Here is my belated report:

Many thanks to crappie chaser and 1Bigfish, retaliate, Cimfl, mr. sturgeon, and everyone else that helped out with where to camp, where to fish, and things to do in this beautiful part of the state of Oregon.

Just brought me, my girlfriend, my 16 ft aluminum boat, a tent and lots of food and drink. Dry ice was my best friend on this trip. Kept food and drink cool all weekend despite temps in the mid 90's.

Got in after a late start from tri cities at 1:00 am. We stayed in Tent spot #1 at Hewitt Park. I thought the facilities were great for camping. Nice shaded areas in all tent sites were great, and bathrooms/showers right next door were convenient. Loved the fire pits/grills, and picnic tables.

wanted to fish for cats from the bank upon arrival but i was just too tired. Got up about 5:30 and out on the water by 6:30. the launch the first day was barely in the water, and by the end of the trip...even the big boats had no problem launching. The powder was spewing muddy water, so we went down river about 2 miles where we came upon an incredible amount of boats already fishing. we were pretty much going for Bass. I tried everything under the sun, but the go-to bait ended up being a simple 4 inch yamamoto grub in a copper color with gold, and silver flakes.

forgot the camera the first day, and of course that was the best bassin. We didnt catch many....about 10 bass, but they were almost all about 14" long, and fat..fat...fat! very healthy fish. I was suprised how fat.

The crappy would take the smaller bass gear, but if you put a jig on...you could catch em almost every cast. Unfortunately they were only about 8" long.

I fished crappy jigs quite a bit hoping to catch some bass and cats as incidentals, but it never worked...:(....all i caught were crappy! can't complain i guess.

the 2nd day: So many boats it was unbelievable. Felt like everywhere i wanted to fish, must have been hit hard at least 2 or 3 times. I tried fishing some of the water that had less obvious structure. That worked a little and we picked up some more decent size bass doing that. didnt fish long on saturday due to the heat, and the insane amount of boats due to the crappy tournament, and nice weather, boat launch working..etc..etc..

We went to Richland...picked up some ice cream cones....AMAZING!....and took a site seeing drive over to halfway and over to check out woodhead. Saw lots of fish along the banks of Oxbow but didnt fish. Finally got to woodhead, and that camp ground looks great, but I'm definatley not sure that i would go the extra 45 minutes to camp there unless i had a 5th wheel or camper with hook-ups. The tent camping at Hewitt I think looked possibly even better than woodhead just for simplicity, the ability to make a reservation, the shade, and bathrooms close.

In total spent only about 4 hours fishing for cats and caught 4 on worms, and 1 Northern Pike Minnow about 16 inches long. A group accross the river from us were slaying 6-8 lb cats on crappy meat. I was going to try some cut bait, but just wasnt all that into it from being exhausted from the heat ealier in the day.

All in all.....great trip...the numbers of Bass were very poor, and the crappy size left much to be desired, but hey....Thats fishin. We ate lots of junk food, saw much beautiful country, lots of chukars, and my girlfriend outfished me for the 3rd time in a row.....(i've only taken her fishing 3 times)

Next year i will not come down if the water is this low again, or if the weather is radical. I havent heard 1bigfish's report, but I didnt hear of anyone doing particullary well on Bass, and it was probably because of the ridiculous heat, or the crazy amount of water filling the reservoir....and that powder river runoff was COLD......My legs would go numb quickly when getting in the water to launch.

Anyway....I'll definatley be back next year, but will plan my trip later around the snowpack and weather patterns.

Nice report, just keep in mind that this is not a normal year in regards to runoff and water levels. I used to go this time of year and for the most part enjoyed success. When the Powder is off, often times Hell's Canyon & Oxbow will produce better fish. In normal years those two bodies of water can produce nice bass especially Oxbow.
I am opting to go to Owyhee this year in an effort to find bigger crappie.

Great report... I was up there over the weekend as well and it was definately smokin up there. I probably went by you at some point. Actually all the boats were from a bass tourney out of idaho I believe. I think there were only twenty people in the crappie tourney total. One of the guys who were running it told me that most people backed out due to the low water. As someone else said thats not typical for brownlee at all. I have been up there in the spring for at least the last 15 years and have never seen it like that. There was so much crap floating that you had to idle thru it. Definately wouldnt be good to run in low light conditions. I guess one of the irrigation dams broke and thats what started the whole thing. Atleast that what Thorny the owner of the hitching post store told me. All in all it was a good weekend and aside from some sunburnt feet I had a blast.:excited:

Hey Fishonjon...when are you going to Owyhee? I'll be there the week of June 16. If Brownlee conditions improve I may spend a day there but focus will be on Owyhee.

Great report. So they got a launch working huh?
Glad you had a good trip. Beautiful country that Halfway is. I could retire there no problem.

raptorschild,
You should have joined us at Woodhead. You would have had the time of you life fishing Oxbow with a crank. I only wish my back could have held up a little better so I could have done more fishing down there. Your report is just what we expected from the Powder Arm. I'm surprised you didn't do better on the main Snake.

Yeah, I really wanted to get over there and meet up with you guys ....

When I went out to the snake we went Right (south), and I heard the fishing had been much better North up by the dam.

We didnt really know what we were doing on the snake...and all the cover was a bit overwhelming to be honest. Fished a lot of places that didnt have fish.

Like you said...the best spots were not the rocky cliffs, or jagged looking cover, but the gently sloping round spots with some rocks.

I didnt even try anything with a sandy type bottom though. Maybe thats where I missed the pattern. I tried some rattle traps up in the powder, but they didnt catch a thing.

Do you just find a spot at woodhead and make it yours? THe place looked completely full by Saturday when we stopped by.

Great report raptors. Never have been at Hewitt but sounds like a great place to camp and fish. We passed by halfway everytime we headed that way to fish/camp at Oxbow reservior. Great part of country. Man I can't wait. I will be making that trip in a month with my boys.:meme:

For us finding a spot was easy since we got there on Tuesday. With the tourney on Saturday the campground was pretty full but I think there were a few open sites.

We got only one or two on cranks on Brownlee but cranks were the ticket down on Oxbow. The best point we found for bass on Brownlee was one right next to the Woodhead campground but any point with a gentle slope seemed to work well. If the wind was blowing and putting a ripple on the water we would catch them in 5 feet or less. When the water was smooth as glass we would just back off a little catch them in 20 feet of water on the same point. We even picked us some smaller fish in 30-40 feet of water but once we got to fishing 30ft or deeper the dropshot was better then the shakeyhead. Less then 30ft of water and the dropshot just was not woking last week.

Sorry we missed you out there.

Great report snake, hopefully next year the water conditions will be better. Looks like a cool place though, minus the river of delicious chocolate. A week and a half or so and we will be into either smallies or monster mutants, cant wait.

Fishonjon...know what you mean. I have actually changed plans and going to Prinville Res instead. I have caught some pretty nice crappie there in the past and there are always willing bass. I have wanted to explore Owyhee but fuel will kill me. Someone has got to do something about the fuel prices, hopefully as people stop driving demand will drop and so will the barrel prices.
