Looking for ideas on my new bench. I know it will be 12'-14' by 24" with a dog leg at the end (24" it will be my fly tying desk.) I am planning on running 2 aluminum T-tracks along the long section for center rests, tensioner and the head stock. They will probably be 6"" apart, that seems the best compromise between small size and stability.

Looking for recommendations on height. Should I build it so that the rod is at a seated chest height or lower down by my elbows? It seems to me that I'll be sitting here for long periods of time and comfort will be important.

Also looking for lighting and storage solutions. Anything that will help me get off on the right foot.

Almost forgot, it will be made out of a 4x8 sheet of 3/4 inch melamine backed by CDX plywood. I'm not sure if I'll put it on a stretcher system (like a cabinetmakers bench,) or make the sides solid to facilitate storage.

I've built my wife almost the exact same thing for sewing/embroidery, just looking to customize for this purpose.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Some of the things will be personal preference. For me, I like to work with a high stool with a back rest with my arms at a comfortable height to the bench.
Had a bench once that had the melamine top. Didn't like it due to static electricty.
Lighting? The more the better!
A couple of these come in handy for really close work.

Ya, I thought about static, my wife does OK. I think it's pledge or someone that has a non residue cleaner that takes care of static also. The melamine is bright and will help with the lighting. Didn't think my eyes would start being a problem at my age but after tying flies seriously for a month or two I can tell you that adequate lighting is A #1 on my list.

Thanks
