I was out lounging by the river, (the Kilchis river is closed) when all of the sudden, I saw jumping going on. Thought it was just a fish having fun, but.... then I saw a cheap red and white bobber with a dying cutthroat attached. A big one. :(

Please... when you visit parks where they don't know the regs, you will most likely find tourists who are fishing unlawfully. It happens all the time.

I spoke to the park hosts last year about this and they said they aren't responsible for that type of thing.

Maybe not...but ethically, one would suppose they might mention it and keep an eye out. Wouldn't you think?

Bill is going to go up to the park and see if he has better luck.

:( I'm just so bummed. I know it's only one fish, but how many more are being killed this way?

Sad but it doesn't surprise me I see things like this all the time I will usually inform said person of the regs and if they don't want to listen I will call the handy little number for violations and let a trooper inform them. Reporting game violations will stop this because it isn't always tourist some people know better and make that decision anyways.:(

I'm a little more proactive when I see someone breaking the law.

First, I warn them.

Then, if they continue their activity, I document the violation. Date, time, location, vehicle information and photos. Then phone the state police with the information. The police can act on the information and cite the individual(s).

I actually got a number of poachers busted a few years ago for a game violation (hunting).

Sometimes people complain about how complex the regs are. I don't buy it. People should know the laws before they head out. I have no sympathy for any adult caught breaking fish/game laws.

Last year on the Mckenzie, I ran into two kids walking back down the river with a stringer full of native redsides!!!!

After a long talk, I had the kids dispose of the fish in the river.

I see it all the time along the lower Mckenzie in the spring and early summer, poacher's using bait to target native trout... Geez, they don't even stock the lower river!!!!

When a river or lake is closed, the fishing does not stop. The reporting by good folks does, because they are not around. The best scenario for a poacher is a closed system.
The small increase of folks fishing my local river, has lead to a increased number of poachers being busted. Its a very good trade off.

I jsut went around today and put up more "Closed To Angling" with dates, signs after telling people the last 3 days in a row that the river I live on is closed.

Of course, then I'm the bad guy and am told "it doesn't say that in the regs..." I offer to show it to them, as there are copies of the regs in the STATE TRUCK I am standing next to:passout: Sheesh people, trust me on this one, its closed right now!

I will just remind you all that there is a angling regulation proposal to open ALL of the North Coast streams to the harvest of cutts/Sea-run-cuts.

The Tillamook meeting to air this and other proposals and take public testimony is this Friday evening...May 23rd. There's a long thread on the main page about this...I'll bump it up.

If you're concerned about cutts...and there's VERY solid science on why you ought to be concerned about Tillamook cuts, you ought to come to this meeting....or submit your testimony by mail or email.
