Let the stillwater fest begin.

I'm on the way out the door to hit some local lakes. I hope the callebaetis are hatching.

Crane sucks. Used to be a great trout fishery but there are only a handful of em left anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more trout in Davis than Crane. The Cranebows are hard to catch and the Brookies dang near impossible. If a guy gets real lucky he may get a hit or two and unless your bobber fishing a midge which is about as much fun as watching paint dry forget about it. Oh and but the way a 2lb tippet is a must if you want to get bit. Take your eyes off that bobber for even a second and you might as well have stayed home. There are only four spots in the lake you have a prayer of catching a Cranebow. These days just landing a bow is a good day and a two fish day on Crane is epic. The water will be cold and high with the fish scattered who knows where. Heck I’m only going to Crane cause Hosmer is still snowed in.

It's still a chironomid show. I caught a number of trout on chironomids and a few on a stillwater nymph. There were some caddis hatching, but even the trout caught on the stillwater nymph were still feeding on chironomids (based on stomach contents).

Largest fish of the day was an 18-½ inch rainbow that took the stillwater nymph:

My “Crane sucks” post was an attempt at sarcasm. I love that place. Anyway here are a few pics from Crane Prairie on Friday. Missed a few photo ops at some of the feistier fish as I was alone in the boat and didn’t want to stress the fish any more than I already had :D. Man there is a lot of water in that reservoir!

Those are some nice trout. Did you measure any of them?

You are a participant in the trout competition, but you are missing your fly gear in the photos. Still, some of those hogs could have taken the lead in the competition (easily)!

Andy I did not measure amy of them. Longet fish I landed was ~22" & close to 4# (no pic). Getting the fly rod into the pic is tough when I'm fishing by myself. In the past I've goten the camera ready just before I net the fish then gently set the net with fish & rod down on the vinyl floor of my boat for a quick pic. Every now & then the fish would do an impersonation of a mexican jumping bean and just go crazy:meme: so I like to leave them in the water when I can.
