Hi guys, hoping you can awnser a question about materials.

I have a very inexpensive Okuma rod that I want to use on the rocks. I grew up in So Cal and we would fish the jetties with "Deck hand rods," or rods with no seat or handle, just grip take and a reel clamp. Some were wrapped with cord.

This particular rod has a foam handle and would be quickly destroyed around fresh water bay (especially how hard I am on rock ros.) I was wondering if there is a specific type of grip tape with a more durable adhesive used? Or should I go to the skate board shop? Also, as far as the cord (haven't decided wich I'll do yet,) will good old green parachute cord do or is there a product that interacts with water better?

I really want to keep expenditure down on this project. Thanks for your help.

Don't see how it matters but the reel will be a 320GTI rebuilt as per Alans instructions.

Thanks

Ron

All the deck hand specials I have seen are wrapped with standard cork tape. The well done ones are tipped with shrink wrap to keep the tape from unraveling. Some also use a piece of heat shrink where they are going to mount the reel so the reel foot doesn't gouge into the cork.

If you hard on stuff I would probably use cord, but I don'[t know what kind I'd use but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be parachute cord

Polypropylene Macrame Cord makes for a durable butt grip. Pretty inexpensive and comes in just about any color. I use it on all my bobber & eggs rods. The one in the picture I used the 6mm size.
Keeps a good grip on the rod even in the fall rains.
