Well, I am back from Brownlee, and had a great time. I took my younger brother and his 15 year old boy over. We stayed at Woodhead in ID because the water was too low to launch out of Hewitt. Day one began with sunshine, and water temps just above 53 degrees surface temp. My brother tied on a perch colored shallow diving crank-bait, and just past the no-wake zone, nailed 8 bass off the first point. All of them running 13-15 inches. He was jazzed for sure. This is the typical fish caught on our trip. http://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/medium/PICT1218.JPG

We ran into plenty of small crappie, but occasionally, we would hit some like this. http://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/medium/PICT1219.JPG

And another one. The kid loved catching the crappie!

I even got into the show on occasion, as this smallie just couldn't resist this tasty little grub on the ultra-light.

I even managed a big crappie while fishing for the smallies. Kind of a reverse of the previous picture.

The water is filling up at a foot or more a day, water temps hit over 63 on the surface, and the average smallie was as large as the fish and game commission said they had ever seen. I caught a tagged fish also. Check the tags, some of them have a $$$ reward on them. Same with the crappie. Fishing was great! Lots of smallies, lots of crappie, although the average size was down, but the weather was great, and the fish co-operated. Tough to have anything to complain about! Now, this fall I hear is even better fishing over there.........hmmmmm. Oh, by the way largest fish weighed was 3lbs 9oz. We had two on that were running like freight trains, and we couldn't slow them down. Oh, actually we weighed one that went 17lbs 5oz. It was a carp. My brother snagged it by the tail on a crankbait. Took off like crazy for the first 30 yards, then just a battle to drag its butt to the boat!

There were plenty of people fishing for the kitty fish, personally I don't like 'em, but they didn't seem to have any problems catching 15-20 of them. The cleaning station was full of them. I didn't see any monsters, but the 3-8 lb fish seemed pretty common.

Thanks for the pics. My wife and I drove down to Hewitt to see what things looked like last Saturday. Still being a relative newbie to Eastern Oregon (only over here a little over 4 years), I was really surprised to see how low it was. Not many people set up with RV's either, so I guess most are going over to the Idaho side?

A quick question for those more experienced at Brownlee than myself: are there any decent spots for bank fishing with things so low (on the Oregon side)?

RoryN: Get to know the Search function on this page. You will learn more about brownlee using that, than you could possibly get anywhere else.

Bank: sounds limited and steep and with many rattlesnakes...but it does sound like there is some in places if your willing to act like a moutain goat. Sounds like if you head south from Hewitt, you'll eventually find some decent bank stuff...but sounds like a long and rough road.

We ended up Boat launching, & Camping at Morgan Cr(aprox 13 miles from Hunningtin)cause it was the only place to launch a Boat with a Motorhome, & Camp by the Water, my old Camp near the Graveyard was a good 100' to the Water, as was Hibbard cr Boat launch/Camp, both are about 1 mile further than Morgan Cr. plenty of Bankfishing around Hibbard cr/Graveyard area, & more up the road, you can also fish/Camp by the mouth of the Burnt rv, just a few miles from Hunnington, when the water comes up a bit, by the time it get's full pool, or near full there are fishing/Camping spots all along the Oregon side. Good Luck! & enjoy one of Oregons best Warmwater fishing spots.
