Heys guys and girls. I have twin daughters that are three years old.:throb: I want to take them trout fishing up to Detroit and my question is, is it legal for them to have theyre own rod in the water? They cant do it all by themselfs of course but they can reel, not real fast but they can get the job done. I cant find my sinopsis anywhere and trying to surf around on ODFW's website puts me in a bad mood I can never find what I need. Any help is much appreciated thanks Metal Head.

children under the age of 14 do not need a license to fish so yes they can have there own poles out. also if they would like to have a license they can have a free one printed up any place you can buy one at

I have never seen one. Get them started enjoying the good life early.

it's my understanding that in the State of Oregon that the person landing the fish is the person who caught the fish. So I interpret that to mean I can bait, cast, set up the pole for the little ones but I am not technically fishing more than one pole personally. I have a four year old and 2 year old twins and that's my take on the situation. My two year olds have not caught a fish yet but my four year old reels them in like a champ. I sometimes just point to the pole that's doing the happy dance and encourage him to jump on it, or other times I'll set the hook and then hand it off to him once his attention comes back from whatever cloud he's staring at. That kid loves to be outside looking at nature.

they can fish at any age. BUT if they are fishing for salmon, steelhead or sturgeon, or halibut they need the appropriate youth tags. $6.50 for a youth salmon, sturgeon, steelhead

Last summer I asked a sheriff at Billy Chinook this question. He told me that technically if you are going to keep a limit of fish for a child that they are supposed to do everything from casting or jigging to reeling the fish in. He said that he doesn't give people grief if they are helping the child a lot but that some officers are real sticklers for the rules. My boys are 6 and 3 and when my wife and I take them fishing we just fish two rods and let them do as much as they want to. I have found that if I am trying to keep both of them fishing with there own rods while I try to fish also I don't get much fishing done any way.

It would be pretty low of a sherrif to give you a ticket while helping your kids catch a trout. If you were in a hogline salmon fishing you may be pushing it, but trout? No way!

2 sets of twins myself! 9 and 2. The older ones were fishing Detroit at 3 years as well! The young ones won't tolerate the life vest yet, so they stay at home.

I know my dog would love to fish. What would hapen if I could teach him how to hold the rod and reel. He would love this. He knows when a fish bites and gets excited. He has his dog licence. That would be great if he could learn.
