View Full Version : Troll speed control using a Troll Master

My trolling motor is an 8 hp Honda 4-stroke. Some kinds of trolling require a pretty precise speed. I've found I can vary the speed with Kokanee and still do pretty well, but salmon in the Columbia and Willamette seem to like a consistent 0.8 mph. The Honda drives me crazy trying to maintain an even troll speed. I get the speed to about 0.8 mph, and then it changes up to 1.2 mph or as low as 0.4 mph, so I am constantly on the throttle to try and keep it at the desired speed.

Today I was at a boat shop that sells Hondas, asking if there was a fix for this problem. The dealer sells a remote-controlled, digital throttle control device (for 4-strokes only) called theTroll Master. Troll Master makes models for all the major brands of 4-strokes. The dealer said that the Troll Master maintains a constant, precise speed that can be easily fine tuned to fractions of a mph. It sells for about $225.00. Anyone have experience with these?

Here's some responses from a previous question about these.

Waterfish,

Is maybe your throttle lock not working. i have a 2001 9.9 honda and the original throttle lock was junk(a first for Honda in my opinion) and then broke. Dealer replaced it for free with an updated/graded lock(they knew all about the issue). Seems to work fine now. I'm also considering a trollmaster and have heard nothing but good reports but I am wanting one to change throttle speeds not maintain constant rpm. i know there are a lot of things that will change your trolling speed other than rpm like water speed, wind, tide, part of the river you are in etc. etc. but if you were speaking to motor rpms changing then................ Good luck

Great fellow to deal with (owner) I called on a Sunday morning about his product expecting an answering machine and he answered the phone and entertained my questions. He is or was located in Idaho but was talking about moving to the Oregon Coast.

Anyway bought one and love it. It is as advertised and works with out a hitch. I use mine in the ocean on my 9.9 Honda kicker. Great addition.

If you go on line you can buy direct from him.

I talked to the owner and ordered the Troll Master Pro 2. I received it 3 days later. I will be installing it this weekend, and am looking forward to trying it out!

Interesting product, does this work off a tachometer or can it be plugged into a gps for true speed?

Doc,
The way I understand, none of the above. It is a remote wired handheld, finely- tuned throttle control. The newest model is digital control with a tach as a reference only. It has some functions such as idle and burst to full throttle, but no "cruise control".

I just installed the Panther steer for my T-8 and will soon look into getting the trollmaster to control both steering and throttle functions in one handheld.
