A perfectly trained ODFW told me there's no such thing as a kokanee surviving spawing to resume a healthy life back in the lake. What do you make of this? Caught it April 27, one of three fish on three consecutive casts into the same school of fish. All three hit very close to the surface, fought admirably, and were about 13" long. Here are two of them.

Dark fish has super developed anal fin and head, no loose scales, predominately dark gray with off white and olive. All fins intact. No signs of fungus, thin with sunken abdomen.

Well, I believe the odfw guy, a salmon is a salmon I guess! I guess I don't really know! Steroids maybe! Weird!

moknots i thought you was jacking me saturday when you told me about it! Apologies for doubtin ya. Strange, very strange indeed. All the signs of being spawned out, but when? Probably this spring. Water is too cold for the fungus to grow maybe. Anyway good informative pic. going up in the morning....eeeaarrly this time!

How did it cut?

Don't know. saved it for ODFW. The local guy did not seem interested. Ideas about someone who might want it?

The fish looks short for a spawner, and has the beak of a young buck.. we all know what buck sockeye ready to spawn look like!

I would vote for mutant, all species have the occasional oddball (maybe a very high percentage in the case of Homo Sapiens.). Chicken geneticists have lots of fun looking for mutation and then trying to use them.

Well Mike, when you catch a couple hundred kokanee in a week, you are bound to get that small % of mutants that are swimming around.

There are a couple of different diseases that fish can pick up at a hatchery that will cause them to discolor. Also can be a sign of severe stress from being trapped in a net at the hatchery or maybe a close encounter with a predator.

Maybe you just scared the bejeebers out of him...

Nice job on the fish!
