Well....after some research, me, a friend of mine and his dad figured we'd head up to rufus woods to chase big triploids we have heard so much about.
Got there at 1 pm last thurs, and fished half of that day, and half of Friday.
This fishery is weird. Think bass fishing for steelhead. We found out after much experimentation that the best tactic was bass plastics or jigs drug while naturally drifting down river. We tried all the conventional trout gear from spinners to fly fishing, plastic egg imitations, to rapalas....everything got outfished by a black jig!!!
my buddy caught about 40 trout in 12 fishing hours, and his dad caught about 25, and I hobbled in with 7 fish for my efforts.
We fished from my 16 ft sylvan, and it was barely small enough to get into the water via a rugged boat launch, and just big enough to handle the waves that pounded on us the first day from the wind. Those waves can get big fast!!!
The only thing I didnt like about rufus was the drive! Its a LONG ways up there even for me out of tri cities on some slow going roads with few passing opportunites.
Fish were nice averaging about 17 inches. About 10 of the fish were at or over 4-5 lbs. another going about 7lbs, and I was lucky enought to tie on to a hawg that was taped at 25 inches long, and 17.5 inches in girth. Not sure of the weight. :thisbig: My question for you all is simple....this being the biggest trout I've ever caught and I kind of want to get a replica done, but I feel like that would be kind of cheesy to mount a genetically altered fish.....what do you all think?
The big fish was my last of the weekend and was caught on a Drop shotted broken back rapala...single barbless gomokatsu.

The biggest double I've ever seen trout fishing!
