I got a blank off someone and was going to have it wrapped up but when I put the 2 halfs together it only overlaped by 1 3/8. Is that enough? Seems short to me and I dont what to have it wrapped and then have it pop. Thanks

That is about 3/8" of an inch longer than the 8# fly rod I built, but it shorter than the Loomis 1086c I did. Call the Mfg of the blank and ask them is the best answer. 90% of the rods I build are 1 piece - someone else have a better answer?

That's pretty short. It may not be the right matching tip by the manufacturer. 1 and 3/8" is going to crack. My only other guess that it will work is that the rod is built for UL panfish/trout rod. As mentioned, you might want to check with the manufacturer on the specs.

Its a espirt 9' and it feels like a 10 to 20lb. I guess I should take it up to Lamiglas and try to get the scoop on it. Thanks for your help

I've had great customer service with Lamiglas. You never know they might get you a better tip section at no cost. Probably just a trade.

If I was concerned about a blank, I'd do what we used to do before the manufacturers started building reinforced tip over butt ferrules. Just wrap the ferrule, a little tighter than you do your guide wraps and nice and long, about 1/4 inch past the point the butt stops in the ferrule.
Also make your wrap start as close as you possibly can to the edge, as this is where virtually all fractures start.

Would it help to use 2 ton epoxy on the ferrule wrap for added streghth?

On ferrule wraps the rule of thumb is 2x the diameter of the largest diameter ferrule - yes you can make them larger if you want but it isn't necessary. Splitting happens at the edge not the middle in most cases. So wrap as close to the edge as possible. Most recommendations are not to increase thread tension cause all you are doing is compressing the outside of the ferrule making it smaller. Since I usually make the wrap a little more than a bunch of thread I prefer to use my standard thread finish, but like almost everything in rod building there is no real rule.

2 ton epoxy will turn yellow over time. If anything I would double or triple coat it with rod finish like flex coat.

That what I will do. Thanks for all the input guys.

Just thread and regular finish epoxy will give you more than enough strength at the ferrule. It will be lighter and look nicer also. Each wrap of the thread with finish on it is good for over 2 lbs of strength. You'll have a bunch of wraps in an inch of ferrule. I've picked up 16 lbs of weight with a wrapped single foot Fuji Alconite #6 fly guide and let it hang for a few days with no problems.

just single wrap it with size a thread and 2 coats of finish. you don't need any more than that and if you add more you will alter the action of the rod.
