I haven't seen any Wickiup reports at all. I hope we all did not decided to skip opening and fish this weekend.

Since Wikiup was one of the few lakes open, there must have been a few who went for the opener! Give us your report, good or bad.

We fished Wickiup all day Saturday and never even had a bite! Threw everything at them but nothing. Saw only 6 to 8 boats out at any given time. Very quite and no crowds. No wind all day which was nice and burnt my neck and ears! Ouch!

Only 6-8 boats? Are you kidding me. OMG it will be crazy this weekend. I was afraid of this happening.

Thanks for the report. :applause:

Lot of boats beached on shore, but hardly anyone fishing. At the South twin store that eve., there were only two photos for the day of a couple a guys with some nice German Browns, but that was it. Most guys we talked to got nothin'! Also no Kokes to be had by anyone we talked to either.

I didn't fish the opener but took my daughter and baby boy and went for a drive on Sunday to give momma a little alone time to get some of her stuff done. We hung out at the boat ramp, north wickiup, and my daughter threw sticks for the dog. I grilled people that were taking their boats out. I spoke with 4 boats. Only one had caught fish, they got 4 browns, a couple over 20". The other three boats had nothing and one of those I know was specifically targeting kokanee. Stopped by South Twin and watched a few boats and bankies while we ate ice cream. Didn't see anyone hook up for the 20 or so minutes we sat watching. One of the guys here at work spent the weekend up there and his group managed one brown from the shore using worms. Overall sounded pretty bad. But the weather Sunday was beautiful.

Fished S. Twin trolling and still fishing over weekend. Lots of planters 8-12"...good bank fishing as well using rainbow power bait. Trolling good with ford fender and worms.

Reports from Wickiup were not good.

I fished all weekend with limited success. Picked up a 21 and a 24 inch browns near the dam on Saturday but, didn't mark a school of fish on the main lake - water temp was 41 degrees. Started again on Sunday near the dam and hooked up with another brown, 20" but no Koke's on the screen. I made my way up to the Davis arm and found the water temp up to 46 degrees and started marking schools of Kokes. We had only couple of takes before I had to head out. I spoke with several boats and also the sheriff, all had the same story - water is too cold. Maybe a few weeks of warmer weather will turn on the fish and get them in the mood!

Thanks for all the reports. :applause: I am headed over tomorrow lets hope the fishing picks up. The best I heard of was a 7lb brown. My goal is one over 5, wish me luck.

Fire Fighter, that is a GREAT report. Thanks for the temps. Get ready. Wickiup is pretty shallow and 46 is WAY in the zone, for jigging -- not trolling. Per Suttle posts, 41 was too cold. A week later, 43 Sat= BIG catches, 44 Sun ditto, 46 monday, ditto. I'd say there's a good chance Wickiup could be fantastic this weekend. Don't make the mistake of missing the big turn on like I almost did at Suttle. Betting Wickiup is next.

moknots - help me out here. I read that the most productive bites for Koke's is 55 degrees. That would put us in the early June time frame, right?
I enjoyed the big fish but, I had my mind set on Kokanee and brought enough tackle to fill a small shop for the entire season. Getting over to the LaPine area is a trek from Canby so, I would like to make my next one a productive one. Any hints would be appreciated.

Thanks - FF

Fire Fighter, the 55 degrees your are talking about is the optimum for kokes throughout the year, especially summer months. However there is an absolutely unbelievable awakening that occurs with our little silver buddies when the water hits around 45 degrees. It don't last long maybe a couple a weeks but it is, in my opinion the best bite of the year. It's hard to describe but very close to fabulously ridiculous!!!!! ........Don't miss it...be ready to jig it!!!!

:yeahthat: This is what it's all about although it usually occurs when I'm not around . Have hit it a few times and there's nothing better than seeing boats with families onboard containing grandparents to the littlest ones all catching fish and having a ball together. Fishing is truly-truly good stuff!

Yup, what Marshworm and Dullhooks said. Especially the "I usually miss it"! Three things at work here. 1) generalized fishing theory, made up of observations, and ... well, made up stuff 2) the spring awakening, which is a special subset of fishing theory, which we are all trying to figure out and remember by talking about our observations and .... making stuff up, and 3) the actual observations, like, "hey, Marshworm just loaded the boat, even thought the water is too cold", or "wow, last week I got skunked, and this week my freezer and smoker are full".

Someone saying 55 degrees is probably talking about finding 52 to 55 degree water in a lake with surface temps in the 70s or even higher, like Shasta, LBC, even bathtub water Wickiup in August.

I am just saying, based on observation, that what just happened at Suttle could happen a LOT faster than you think at Wickiup, and when it does, the guys that are there will be making some really nice pictures of a lot of dead fish:excited:

Be there if you can, you will never forget it. "There" will also be Odell, Crescent, and others, each in their own time. Kind of nice having lakes on slightly different schedules. That makes the reports we share especially valuable. Go when you can, but try to hit what MW and DH are talking about. If you are making a big trek, try to keep an open mind about moving around a little. If you miss it at one lake, you might be able to drive 30 miles and hit it someplace else.

good thoughts all!
we all can't be there at the right time but through the words and excitement of those that were the rest of us can still enjoy the imagining of it all. And that my fellow koke heads is what fishin is all about!! Sharing, sharing, sharing.
If we get caught up with the catchin and forget the fishin then the catchin will soon lose its shine.
