What brand of line do you use? I was using maxima ultra green. But I keep on getting birds nests in the middle of my dang line! I just spooled it yesterday too! So is there a brand and type you like to use? What is it? I prefer to use 6lbs to 8lbs. Thank you.

If your putting line on aspinning reel ..it must curl the rite way or you will end up with the dreaded "BIRDS NEST"........mike

I'm experimenting with some braided line in 20# this year on a couple of my spinning reels. So far so good. I'll know more in a couple weeks.

I use 30 lb braid on the rest, mostly PP. Suffix seige Tangerine is the mono I have recent tangle free success with most recently.

2 things that help- don't over fill your spool, underfill it if anything

Take a good size weight out and go out in field and cast it as far as you can, then stretch the *&%^ out of it.

Sometimes it helps to do this when you start your fishing as well.

Just don't throw it up in the tree branches and get your first tangle/snag of the day without even leaving the ramp.:passout: Not sure how I knew to mention that one:wink:

If fishing line came on the same size spool as your reel has you wouldn't have a problem. After being spooled at the factory all mono's develop a "memory" on the spool. When re-filling my reels I always go for a walk with the line then lay it on the ground and go back and spool it up. It is important when spooling it to hold a small amount of tension on the line about a foot above the reel. i do this by pincing the line lightly between my fingers. Doing this allows the line to go onto my reels in a relaxed state and I never have a problem with bird nests... least ways due to the line twisting!

I don't have a problem loading my reel with line since I work at Joe's I have a great machine that helps me load it up. Good point on useing the braided line. I never had a problem with it. I have some Stren Microfuse 20# I might have to give that a try.

It's been hard to find a bad brand in recent years, but all the specialty lines can be a little confusing! I think the really hard stiff monos like maxima are great for bottom dredging in rocky rivers, but for lakes, I go with limp soft lines. Trolling, I've had good luck with stren, suffix, and a number of brands and off brands that come on 1/4 pound spools. I have almost quit buying the "one shot" spools (except for leader) because I like to change out line fairly often.

For casting and jigging, I love Proline, suffix and the new Daiwa Samuri (scary thin) spectra or deema, topped with some good mono leader -- 10-30 feet). If you are worried about fish seeing deema, Berkely just came out with one thats white, but turns nearly clear when it gets wet. Cool.

As stated elsewhere, you have to wind your line on spinning reels in the same direction as on the spool you buy, or you'll get a twisted mess. The stiffer the line, the worse the nest. Put the spool of line flat on the floor, on whichever side allows the line to go on your reel without twisting. It should coil off the end of the spool for spinning reels. It's no different than coiling a rope, or your garden hose -- none of these things behave very well if they are twisted. Neither do I for that matter.

If you screw up, dont worry, just let all your line out with a medium weight spoon (not a spinner) -- connect it to your line with a couple of quality bead chain swivels, or several good snap swivels. Pull it around the lake for a couple of miles, reel it all back up, and you will be good to go. In the river you can do the same thing with a teardrop casting float.

The problem might be the way you are loading your reel. If you are loading a spinning reel by cranking the reel and pulling the line off the line spool while the spool turns (like a bait casting reel), the line will be twisted as it goes on your spinning reel. Try laying the spool of line flat on the floor with the label showing and feed the line through the guide closest to your reel then tie to the spool on the reel. Hold the rod over the spool of line, keep tension on the line with the hand that's holding the rod, and crank the reel a few times. Stop and put some slack in the line to see if it twists. If it does, turn the spool of line over so the label is down and crank the reel again. I have used that method for years and never had a problem with birds' nests unless I do a lot of spinner fishing with cheap swivels. Good luck.

I've been using Yo-Zuri Hybrid (Flouro/Nylon) 8lb for trolling. I really like it and you can usually find a 1700yd spool on ebay for about $15. Before that it was Maxima Ultragreen.

I love the p-line flora-clear. I use the 4lb for my jigging rods and the 6lb for my trolling rods. Never have a birds nest problem with them and seem to almost be twice the strength as the poundage indicates.

I think my main problem was the quality of swivels i was using. I was using those cheap brass ones then I tried the steel berkley ones with my braided line and there was no problem.

the new Daiwa Samuri (scary thin)

moknots - have you found this around Bend someplace? I looked at Sportsmens and Joes after you mentioned this in the class but didn't see it.

I have to agree. I tried different lines to see if there is a advantage over the years but I always come back to P-line. The last two years I been using braid. I love that you can feel the action of the lure and there is no stretch. But I also had two tough years on the water. When fishing is tough for me its easy to start second guessing my choices and thats why I am going back to p-line.
