I got the following from several Ifishers who have my email address:

Subject: Fw: Virus warning!

We just received this email this morning. I found this virus on our computer. So I am passing the email to everyone in our address book. I don't know if the file is really a virus or not, but since I did actually find the file on my computer, I wasn't taking any chances. I hope you don't find it on yours.

I had this in my computer, it is easy to get rid of but you must do it. I have know idea how I got this.
Subject: checking for this Virus

I am sending this because I found this virus in my computer system and it may be in yours since you are all in my address book.

Just follow the steps below to see if it is in your and how to get rid of it. This ia a virus that is spread from address book to address book. It is apparently undetectable by Norton. It remains dormant for about 14 days then activates and wipes out the hard drive data. The directions for removing it are easy:

1. Go to Start-then to 'find' or 'search', depending on your computer.

2. In the 'search for files or folders' type in sulfnbk.exe---this is the virus.

3. In the 'look in' make sure you're searching Drive C.

4. Hit search button (or find).

5. If this file shows up (it's an ugly blackish icon that will have the name 'sulfnbk.exe'
DO NOT OPEN IT

6. Right click on the file-then go down to delete and left click.

7. It will ask if you want to send it to the recycle bin, say yes.

8. Go to your desk top and double click in the recycle bin.

9. Right click on 'sulfnbk.exe' and delete again-or empty the bin.

If you find it, send this email to all in your address book, because that's how it's transferred.

I found the file on my computer and deleted it.

Today, I get the following message:

Virus warning! My Eye
I was doing a little more research and this is what I came up with. Please read and make up your own mind. I think it's a hoax but everything should be Okay.
I think it resembles the Polish Virus. No offense to Polish people here. Just trying to right a wrong!! I hope. If anybody lost a hardrive, I would certainly like to hear it!!!
Thanks,
Andy

So I went to my daughters laptop to check to see it the SULFNBK.exe was on her computer (hers in not on line so she should not be exposed to the virus.)

I found the file with the little black icon next to it.

My question to whoever can help is this a real virus or is the virus when you delete the file.

If we delete the file and we are not suppose to, what do we do to restore it.

Does anyone know what the SULFNBK.exe do? When I tried to open it on the laptop I got an error message.

Any help would be appreciated. For those of you who got the message proceed with caution until we find out what is going on.

Thanks, Giz...

Giz,

I'm running Windows 98, w/Internet Explorer, Netscape, & Outlook Express.
sulfbk.exe is not on my system.

Have you done an internet search yet?

Standby.

Giz,

Check out this Yahoo link. It contains a link to Symantec.com to reinstall sulfbk.exe.

Looks like a hoax.

Symantec Security Response encourages you to ignore any messages regarding this hoax. It is harmless and is intended only to cause unwarranted concern.

Type: Hoax

Description:

The following hoax email was first reported in Brazil, and the original email was in Portuguese. Other language versions are in circulation. Currently, the English language versions are most common.

CAUTIONS:

* This particular email message is a hoax. The file that is mentioned in the hoax, however, Sulfnbk.exe, is a Microsoft Windows utility that is used to restore long file names, and like any .exe file, it can be infected by a virus that targets .exe files.
* The virus/worm W32.Magistr.24876@mm can arrive as an attachment named Sulfnbk.exe. The Sulfnbk.exe file used by Windows is located in the C:\Windows\Command folder. If the file is located in any other folder, or arrives as an attachment to a email message, then it is possible that the file is infected. In this case, if a scan with the latest virus definitions and with NAV set to scan all files does not detect the file as being infected, quarantine and submit the file to SARC for analysis by following the instructions in the document How to submit a file to SARC using Scan and Deliver.
* If you have deleted the Sulfnbk.exe file from the C:\Windows\Command folder and want to know how to restore the file, see the How to restore the Sulfnbk.exe file section at the end of this document.

Vinney and others: it appears that it is a hoax. Since posting the notice, I received another email with a reference to:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html

Now I have to find the disk and reinstall the deleted file.

Hi Gizmo Man,
I got the same email last night and I was the one who did a little more research on it to find it out to be a hoax. Only bad thing I followed the instructions on it and need to restore that file. There was 2 links to read on my email that do not appear in your post. They were both explaining the hoax and more than likely no need to worry about your hardrive. These should have been the links to read on it also. It's funny you got my email and missed the links.

My wife sent this email to you. She sent it to everyone in our address book. Chances are you bought eggs from me and you got it sent to you. The reason it seems like she only sent it to you is because everyone we sent it to was Bcc so no one else got your email address or anything like that. My wife thought this was a real virus until she checked it out after she sent it out. This email was followed by another email entitled ooopps My bad in which we told everyone that we had made a mistake and included the link to fix it(I believe). I am sorry for any inconvience this caused. She was just concerned after she found it on our computer that we could have pasted it onto you since you had emailed us. This is a hoax that makes you delete a file that is on your computer.

Sorry,
Scott and Lucinda Amerman.

Scott A. Since this started from you than I would suggest...oh say 5 qts of cured eggs for the inconvience....

You are not the only one who sent me a notice. This thing is going around quite fast. I just wanted to post this so no one else falls for it.

I did get a sircam Virus about a month ago and a little nervous on getting another one. The thing with this virus stuff is you never know when it's gonna be a real one. I'm glad I did a little more checking on it and wished I would have gotten Scott's mail about it being a hoax. One of the links I put on here says you don't need it. There's also a link so you can follow instructions on restoring it. I just did. I hate to be fileless.
One more thing, I'm wondering if were playing on the computer too much and not doing enough fishing?

Don't feel bad on this one. I got the same letter from a friend in Nevada that had recently sent me a letter. I found it and deleted it as it said. Then I notified all that were on my list and then three sent me back the hoax info. So now it is off my system. I tried to find it to replace it and so far I am still trying to find it. Oh well it says that it isn't needed.

This sucker has really made the rounds. I am going to check the hoax sites first from now on. Dang those blankety blanks that start these things in the first place. I would love to troll one behind the boat on the Columbia for a few hundred miles.

My father-in-law sent it to me, and he's an engineer, and his wife used to work for Microsoft, so I figured it was legit. Quite embarrassing to e-mail everyone on my address book, then find out it was a hoax. I had my aunt panicked.

I recived the same email from a friend.
But I already knew it was a hoax so I sent everyone else an email saying it was not true and if they trashed that file they should restore it
What a mess.
boy its kinda pathetic that all some people do is sit around and dream up a hoax and dream up a virus.
and why dose it seem like there is a virus produced once every 3 weeks?
who's doing this and why
maybe its the anti-virus companies just trying to stay in bussines

If all of you would just put this web address in your favorite places and then go to it when someone tells you about a virus you can find out firsthand if it is or is not a hoax.

http://www.symantec.com

It would save you a lot of grief.
