Wouldn't it be really good if someone showed up at your Christmas shindig with a cooler full of crab or a couple chrome metalheads?

Yep!

Rivers are dropping a little but not really clearing yet. Ike is a possibility.

So, there has to be a place to get some crab, even with the 30 some days of rain in a row. The Ocean is tempting but still too rough. It was 7 and 1 today and getting worse for the next couple of days. The Bays are full of runoff, or are they?

Maybe Newport.

What do you think?

My first choice would be the Columbia. Out between Buoy 20 and 22 on the Oregon side. Pots in about 30-40ft of water. I don't know what all the rain has done over the last 3 weeks but prior to that we were down there and all 4 of our party scored limits
Commercial pots may be there now also.
There has only been one trip that we made last year and that was on Super Bowl Sunday that we did not get full limits. The reason was we had limited time to get back in time for the game.
Has anyone been down there lately?

John,
Isn't that the beginning of a coastal Christmas Carol?

"Have yourself a crabby little Christmas . . . (something, something,) . . . Yuletide . . .
(words, words, words) . . . and have yourself a crabby little Christmas day."

Merry Christmas from Walla (there ain't no fishing 'til the shopping is done) Walla, WA

Well, I am expecting some of those new plastic traps for Christmas and will be staying up in Ocean Park around New years, so I will let you know how the crabbing was.

Wish me luck!

I spent about 5 years in a row crabbing in the dark on Christmas eve before I got married. It was a great tradition, rain or moon to ring in Christmas. Never saw another boat on the bay on any of those years, I guess everybody was home drinking egg nog.

Then I got married, and my wife couldnt imagine not being with family socializing, singing carols    , and doing that family stuff. The vote to go crabbing or stay with extended family is at a dead lock of 1 to 1 (me -vs- wife). So that means the boat stays in dry dock and I get to drink hot cider with the in-laws. Jingle bells, jingle bells .......

Heading to Siletz Bay myself. I always seem to do good there and it is such small bay the water seems to get salty quick.

Johnboy,

With 5 rivers feeding it and some of them at flood stage I'd forego T-bay fer crabs. Try Nehalem or maybe Netarts. Contact Jetty Fishery Marina - RV Park - Store
27750 Highway 101 1-800-821-7697
or Bay Shore RV Park & Marina
PO Box 218 Netarts, Oregon 97143 Tel: 503 842 7774
They should be able to tell you how crabbing is going and maybe it could save you a trip.

Got the Father-in-law coming in today so I won't be able to get out short of a kidnapping   but feel free to stop by with boat loada  .

Good luck out there and be careful.

Pilar, I would second your recommendation on Yaquina bay, although I haven't heard reports to confirm that. With the small river, which hasn't been flooding, there should be some decent hardshells at least up to the OSU docks. (Judging from past experience). Good Luck.

John - I talked to dad last night and a guy he works with went out in Tillamook bay with a couple buddies on Thursday and they got 34 crab. I have no idea how many pots or how long they crabbed but, that didnt sound to bad.

its anybodys guess
