Mike has been fighting cancer of the mouth and throat for more than a year. He underwent radiation and chemo treatment and was clean for a while. A recent PET scan showed that the shielding used to protect his jaw and teeth during the radiation treatment also protected the cancer cells and they have now spread into his tongue and jaw bone. Mikes Surgery took place Thursday May 8, and extended into Friday. They removed the front part of his tounge and a major part of his jaw. They replaced the jaw with his leg bone. He will be in the intensive care unit for three days in an incuced coma, then another two weeks in the hospital. His brother Chris is with him and is an EMT. That is a blessing to me.

Please pray for Mike, and for his surgeons and doctors and nurses. Please also pray that his family will have the strength to give him the support that he will require. These are hard times. Thank all of you so very much for being here for us and for your prayers.

That is so sad, I hardly know what to say. I just lost my little brother to cancer, January 26th, and he had just celebrated his 53rd birthday. I will pray they are able to give Mike a reasonable existence. And, I'll also pray for you and the rest of Mike's family.:pray::pray::pray: Don

Radiation and Chemo are no longer options. He will have a feeding tube inserted on Tuesday, April 22 as he can no longer eat. On May 8 he will undergo surgery that will remove part of his jaw and tongue. The jawbone will be replaced by a bone from his leg and titanium plates and screws. He will require major reconstructive plastic surgery. The surgery will be done at the Moffit Center in Florida. He will require the feeding tube for the rest of his life. Without the surgery there is no hope of recovery. He is 53.

Please pray for Mike, and for his surgeons and doctors and nurses. Please also pray that his family will have the strength to give him the support that he will require. These are hard times. Thank all of you so very much for being here for us.

You have our prayers, and thoughts, oral cancer is such a devistating disease:( I am using my husband's ifish registration name to reply(I am bassettmama). I am a dental assistant and really know how awful this cancer can be. I thought I would let people know in the ifish community that there maybe hope in the future for this particular cancer. Everyone ask your doctors about the Gardisil vaccine that is for cervical cancer, the virus that causes cervical cancer is the same virus that causes 70% of oral cancers(John Hopkin's University study)

Once again I am so sorry for all your struggles ahead, and me and my family will be praying for you.

Sorry to hear the bad news, my family and I send prayers to your family. We are also in the battle for life with our 5 year old daughter and know all to well the worry when your kids are facing a life and death situatation. Life can throw you a curve ball sometimes and it just doesn't seem fair, it makes you mad, sad and you feel helpless as a parent not being able to really help. Just love them through it, it is all we can do. Good luck and God speed to recovery!

Still praying... How is he doing?

First off, thank all of you for your prayers and support. They have been a great comfort to Mike and our family.

They took all of Mike's tongue except the root, and reconstructed another out of muscle and tissue from his thigh. They removed half his lower jaw and made him a new one from a leg bone and titanium. He was in an induced coma for four days.

Amazingly he went home last night. He went from being on a respirator and having pneumonia to breathing on his own to having the trach removed in a week... Devine Intervention! He is frustrated not being able to talk, but may even be able to do that and even eat soft food with therapy. He is walking with a cane and walker. The Doctors are incredulous.

Thank all of you again. I give thanks for Mike's progress. There are hard times still ahead, but he is determined to go forward.
