Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the following service shops: Pro-Marine in Wilsonville, All American Marine Service in Hubbard, Nelson Marine in Newberg.
My boat has an old Volvo-Penta that needs some work and I'm trying to figure out where to take it.
Thanks
May as well take a shot to see if any of you have some suggestions. Motor is an old 4-cyl Volvo and outdrive, dual carbs, 140 hp. When not in gear, it runs and idles great. However, once in gear with a load on it, it starts surging and backfiring, and I can only get about 3600 rpm out of her. Carbs have been rebuilt. Any thoughts?

check the centrifugal advance weights in the distributor...they can corrode in place and throw off the timing

Thanks guys, I'll have them checked out. I know the plugs and wires are new, sounds like we may not have gone far enough there.
TTT for the service shops.

The shop I used on my Volvo Penta was Metro Marine, on Columbia Blvd in Portland. Marc was awesome, I would highly recommend him. He did great work at a very reasonable price.

I second the recommendation to Mark at Metro Marine. He is very knowledgeable about Volvos, and a fair and honest guy.
My prior boat had a Volvo 4 cyl, but was a single carb model, 130 hp. I would definitely look at the distributor, points, timing. And, if you still have points, condesor, etc., I would get rid of them. Salt water is really tough on that system, and I was needing tune-ups a couple times a year. hard starting, rough running. Yuk. I pulled out the points and installed a Pertronix Ignitor in the distributor. I think it was like about $100 at the time. I'm no mechanic, and I was able to do it myself. I think I got it at Cook Engine. It eliminated the hard starting and rough running problems and made the boat much more reliable.
