On the starboard side of my 40 HP 4 stroke Merc there is a vacuum gizzy with 2 nipples. One has a hose on it going to the front of the motor.. the other is just open. I don't think it's suppose to be open.. I'm thinking at least a cap on it. You can hear the vacuum sucking away when the motor is running. A vacuum leak isn't a good thing on a car.. so I'm thinking I need to cap this. You can see it in these photos. Maybe it's why my motor idles too high.

Thanks

I just looked at my 2007 60hp Merc. The nipple is open just like yours. My motor runs excellent -so I don't think thats the reason for your high idle.

I have the same motor in 2002 first year I have the same fitting and it is also not capped I would leave it that way. Have any of you guys changed the water impellar on this motor yet? I can not figure out how to disconnect the shift rod from the lower unit to remove the lower unit. I have over 800 hours on this motor with absolutely no problems great motor...

I have another question. I notice the small fuel filter on your unit is not full. Mine will fill up when I pump the bulb but after 3 minutes my filter container is runs as low as your shows in your picture. You would think it would stay full when running. I changed the filter and made no difference I was wondering if you guys see the same thing when the motor is running...

Wow 800 hrs .. awesome .. I hope to use my T-8 most of the time.. so lets see.. it has about 50 hours on it now.. soooooooooooooo .. maybe when I am 100 years old.. it might be time for a new one.. Anyone see Ol ^5s on the river at 100 .. look the heck out.... Thanks for the reply .. I noticed the empty fuel filter too.. but my Harley's was the same way..it's flowing and geeting filtered .. so guess it's good..

Good Luck Everyone.. ^5's (I'm totally a rookie now.. so look the heck out now actually)
