I have an older smokercraft boat with a short shaft transom, and a short shaft motor. From time to time when out on the lower Columbia I get a little uncomfortable with how close the waves come to topping the transom.

What I am after is some input on how to gain a little piece of mind without buying a new long shaft motor and adding 6" to the back of the boat. Is there a way to add some kind of barrier to take care of the issue?

I was thinking about possibly cutting some rubber flaps (truck bed rubber mat) and screwing them on the outside of the transom, but with all the great knowledge that is here I am sure someone has a better idea.

Some pics of your boat would be nice for we who are unfamiliar with older smoker craft ...:twocents:

I have not gotten the picture loading thing down yet, so I can only discribe my situation. Sorry.

I did forget to mention that this is a 15' Alaskan model with high sides, but a low transom.

You can buy "Splash Guards", the walleye guys in the East us them alot due to the fact they like to troll in reverse. I've seen them but believe them to be kinda expensive for what they are. Google them up and maybe you'll get an idea of how to make some, lots cheaper.

I had some things called "Wave Wackers" on an older boat of mine. Worked really well.

Why in the heck would someone want to trol azzbackards??? Seams like a good way to take a wake and sink a boat.
