Grits

Thinking about catching the flu tommorow so I can take my son on a much deserved fishing trip. I have been pretty busy lately and haven't had much time with him.
Does anyone know if you are able to launch from any of the boat ramps at Detroit now? Would it be worth hitting this time of year? I figured I would troll some kind of flasher with a wedding ring and worm. Any tips would be appreciated.

You can launch at Mongold with a small boat or a lot of patience. Trolling is good with small blade flashers and a wedding ring tipped with powerbait (any color). Plunking by the dam gets good results as well. Powerbait with or without a worm, and jigging with anything silver to pink/white works.

Grits, call the forest service or state parks before you drive that far without knowing. You may be able to fish at Big Cliff below the Dam. I don't recall if it is open to fishing or not. Also Foster or Green Peter Res. might be open. They are near Sweet Home, East of Albany.

In my experience, Big Cliff Reservoir doesn't put out fish very well during the winter. Detroit tends to fish very well this time of year. Don't troll very deep. Anywhere from 1 to 15 feet is where the fish will be this time of year. If you can't get your boat in at Mongold, try fishing from the bank near the log boom. If you put on a triple teaser or other small spoon, with a crescent weight about 2 feet up your line, cast and retrieve slowly, you should be able to pick up lots of trout and kokanee.

I didn't have any trouble over thanksgiving launching at Mongold. Of course a drift boat doesn't need very much water to launch. I just trolled powerbait w/o flashers and one egg sinker and we took home a limit including a chinook.
