Fished the area between T-6 and Kelley Point on Saturday with pretty good results. I saw a couple of boats hooking up but it looked pretty slow when we arrived. I fished the ebb with some pretty good numbers. We landed about 15 shakers in 3 and a half hours of fishing with a 43 inch at the last cast of the trip. We ended up pulling anchor around 4:35 and hit the dock just as it was getting dark. Not a slammer of a trip but we did pretty good considering.

Sorry I couldn't make the shin dig SailCat. Erica has not been sturgie slammin in awhile and she was having an itch to go. I would have fished today when it was nice weather wise but the tides were running late. I always seem to do well fishing the current and usually will not fight the wind trying to keep a boat straight during an incoming around Portland. Squid outfished smelt 3 to 1 with a little anise to spice things up.

Fished the Kelly Point area on Sunday. Fished a couple of miles below the Willamette to start and only had two shakers to show for it so I headed back up below the mouth and ended up with 5 more shakers, biggest being a 40incher. Stomped smelt seemed to hold its own against squid. There was little wind to speak of and with all the water, current on the incoming was not a problem. Once the tide turned to the out the bite was off.

Unlike some  (just teaseing T  ) I made it to sailcat's place and I must say the guy can produce a feast that is second to none. Thanks MT!!!

SureSet,

Nice to finally put a face to the name and the boat!

It's weird, but that seemed to be the pattern on Friday 12/7, too. Great bite on the incoming ... nothing to speak of on the falling tide. I guess I'll ponder it for a while. Don't ya just hate it when the fish don't follow the rules?

That is strange about the tide. We had no problem catching fish on the ebb. I have never been a fan on the incoming in that area but might give it a shot. When the flood is coming, is it actually strong enough to put the stern of your sled pointing towards Bonny? I fished the flood last spring a few times and all the water would do is stop. The water was still and the wind pushed you all around. On my next four off I might give it a shot. Looks as if that sturgie derby might be interesting hugh?

Fished 12-8 just below kelley point at marker 36.
anchored at 7:45 ish...caught 5 shakers off smelt, then a very nice 47 inch big'un. When I released him, the guy next to me about dove in after it!! Switched to sand shrimp around 11:00 and caught 5 more shakers, biggest one 41", by 2:00...Called it a day as fishing buddy had to babysit while wife christmas shopped.

Had a great time!

Tacklebuster,

what kind of boat do you have? I am sure that I had to have seen you as there were only about 10 boats fishing that area all day...

I have a silver and black NR...grey top.

You guys notice how white and fat the fish were? Not your typical skinny upriver sturgies………

I thought they looked very white...someone told me they were fairly fresh in from the ocean.

After seeing you during URB season and "CHAT" on Weds nights it was good meeting you to WaterDog. We managed a 44" but had to work for it. Only landed 5-7 shakers all day. Seemed like the bite was strange, maybe it's water temp, color or flow, but we had fish work the bait only to seem to leave it after a tug or two.

God knows it's been awhile since we've had a colored river to fish in, this may have been normal two years ago and I just forgot........

SureSet, it has been a while since we've had water and color around here. Shows how soon we forget things. Heck, I’m still trying to get used to fishing in the rain again.

We had the same kind of bites. Couple of good bumps then nothing. Guess that just means we need get on the water more.

I fished with the Slutgoddess just down from the mouth of the Willamette about a 1/2 mile or so.

We were only able to get about 5 shakers, and one nice fat 43 incher.

There were fish visable on the fishfinder all day they just didn't seem to interested in biteing.

Sounds like there was ample IFish representation out there!

I was surprised more boats weren't out. Thought it would be packed.

Anybody have a good way to secure sand shrimp to hooks? I tried stretchy thread...it lasts, but takes me a long time (2 minutes) to tie it on. Is there an easy way to do this?

Hey STZ II, we were right above you in the white NR with no top. Caught a couple of shakers there and two more down below a couple of miles in another of the **** 's favorite holes.
I forgot all of my scents in the bait fridge at home but we made it interesting with some PowerBait grubs and Banana Boat dark tanning oil.
Yes I said Banana Boat.

Tagster,
I have a bluish Weldcraft Renegade with a grey top. We probably blasted right by you around 1:00 that day. I was fishing on the Washington side across from the first crane right below the green can. We usually get into some pretty nice fish in that area. I will look for you the next time I'm out. I am thinking about Sunday or possibly Monday giving her another shot.

NorRivDave,

I wondered if that was you...Was not sure. Thanks for the wave!

It should start getting good out there. StzII was the fish catcher of the day. We had a great time on the river. Just enough action to keep us interested and a nice 43" fatty.

Next time drive by and bump the boat to get my attention!

Regards!

Bill

Might try tieing up a couple of shrimp baits after you get your frist one out. 18" leaders with a clip hook to exchange with. I keep a couple of smelt ready to go for when it gets hot and heavy.

You know, Billfish, that would make way too much sense.

I didn't even think of pretying. Your suggestion would, of course, seriously cut down my down time. Thank you.
