OK - I'm looking for a little input here. My father-in-law has mentioned that he wants his own set of waders in the past year, and I'm really not sure what to get him. He only fishes about 10 days a year, and 99% of the time he is with me. I usually just toss him my old pair of 3mm neoprenes (a little leaky!) and off we go. He would fish with me on the North Coast during Christmas and then the Deschutes in July/August.
I haven't ruled out new neoprenes, but I'm curious if anyone has purched the Cabelas 'featherlite' chest waders which run between 49 - 59 dollars. They 'look' like you could layer fairly well underneath in the winter and then be comfortable for those hot summer days.
Any ideas?
I'll post MY CHRISTMAS LIST later in hopes that you can contact my lovely wife with any wonderful suggestions. Thanks!

Dave,
I haven't tried the featherlites, but the Original 5mm neo's are slick as snot and right in my price range. I know it doesn't exactly answer your question. I'm just giving my 2 cents.

FYI: Waders come in oversize boxes so just know that Cabellas charges big bucks oversize shipping.
Read the very fine print on the catalog pages.
In actuality, they are not an oversize.

OK I'm gonna sound like a Cabela's salesman here. I just started using the cabelas dry plus breathable waders. boot footed. they are about $169 a pair. these are the best. they are comfortable, light, and have 1 mm neaopreme sewed in from the knee down for added warmth. You do not sweat in these waders. I spend a lot of time in my waders and this is the best pair that I have ever owned.
Secondedly they have the best customer service in the world bar none. I have sent waders back and they have replaced tham and paid for shipping during that.
Dan!

Lets just say I'm a Cabela's man. Whenever I get the new catalog I sprint from the mailbox to the only place a guy can get any privacy in the home, my bathroom. I lock myself in for at least an hour or two!
I'm probably going to go with the featherlites for the old guy. And if they don't work, you just can't beat that good ole Cabela's customer service!

How sad :depressed:
Look at the sponsors of this board
Note how many local dealers, wholesalers and manufacturers support our fisheries and work their tales of for our fisheries.
But you guys gush about sending your money to Nebraska so Mr. Cabella can make more money to support his Midwest fisheries, midwest economy and midwest employees.
How sad....
Makes no sense to me what so ever. :depressed:

Dear Straydog.....
You'll be glad to know that I spend 99% of the little money I earn right here in the Northwest. Did I mention in my post that I BUY A LOAD of stuff from Cabela's? No....
You are being a little self-rightous? Or do you just like to jump in the middle of someone's thread and open you mouth, hence proving that you really don't know what the heck you're talking about?
Probably coming from a guy who owns a Toyota, Nissan, or Mitsubishi....
OH, if you have any information regarding the Cabela's featherlite waders that I mentioned in my original post, which is the original topic, I would love to hear from you. thanks.

Out of the sponsors on this site that I quickly looked at, it appears that Big fish Tackle is based in California, the owner of Discount tackle is in Colorado, and GI Joes is local.
Everybody has had their experiences with Joe’s, mine have been mediocre at best.
I prefer not to shop there.
Fisherman’s Marine is great for tackle, but they don’t always have what I want when it comes to apparel.
Cabela’s is in Nebraska, and through the years they have earned my money through great customer service, good products, and fairly competitive prices. They got a good thing going.
I buy almost all of my stuff locally, so I wouldn't mind sending 50 bucks to Nebraska for a pair of featherlite waders. If I could find them at that price in Oregon, you bet I would buy them here.
By the way, while I was at Gart Sports yesterday, I saw a pair of Hodgman Breathable WAIST HIGH waders. They were called "Guide Pants". They ran about 100 bucks. Might look at these!
My two cents.

Eastside,
A little ***** arent we???
I thought I was nice and polite but find it disappointing you are so excited about the local's competition that you run from the mailbox to the crapper in your excitement.. dosen't sound like a guy that spends only 1% of his tackle dollars there but hey, maybe it's the best reading you can find. I admit they have tons of pictures to look at.
I don't know anything about their house brand of waders but know that most every manufacturer makes a selection of different styles and price points available, are able to be purchased locally and probably many come out of the same factories as the Cabelas.
FYI, I know a little about what I speak, I have been in the business for over 25 years, got into the bus. because I love to fish and hunt and have two Chevy's and a Ford to go along with the Toyota parked in my driveway.
Now, have another cup of coffee, mellow out, think about who helps support our local fisheries and then think about where Cabella's (as well as the majority of other brands) has their waders made before you start suggesting others are self righteous.
One more thing, yup, I will continue to support and promote our local dealers, even if means jumping into the middle of thread with an opinion...... gggaasssppp!!!!

And who's a little *****? Obviously the word Cabela's touches a nerve with you because they are the competition.
I actually take a little offense to your original post. To be honest, most of the time my money is spent locally for those exact reasons that you mentioned. But once in a while there are items that I can't find locally that Cabela's does have, at a reasonable price, with great customer service. The original post was about their unique featherlite waders. I was inquiring about them and wanted to know if anyone on this board knew anything about them. If you have a similar item at a reasonable price in your shop, please let me know and I would be happy to buy from you! But if you don't, I just might buy from them.... No apologies needed.
Again, you are making claims that you don't really know about simply because I made the comment about Cabela's - I'm disapointed that you jump all over me because I enjoy their business. Start offering quality lure paint and other misc tackle, clothing, and atv accessories at good prices with GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE and I'll spend the remaining 1% of my cash, like the remaining 99% - which isn't much! - in your shop.
I'll forget the comment about nice pictures...

No personal slams? Read your original post again.
Then, lets drop it and move on.
I'm still interesting in finding info on the above mentioned waders!

I have and I did again....
Sorry, I don't see any personal slam in my original post.
I bit back in my next post, though.
That's how I am. I am what I am.
You're right, let's move on and good fishing to you. Good luck with your waders as well.
BTW, I don't own a shop.

So, am I going to get in trouble if I say I fish with hooks that were made in Japan? No big deal!
Eastside, you earned the money that you're spening, so spend it any way you want.
Sometimes they just get *****, oh well

I'd spend a few extra bucks and get the Cabela's GII dry plus waders for about 100 bucks. I just bought a pair and they are pretty nice.
I used to have a pair of those PVC waders from Cabelas. They were cheap, but they were hot in the summer and cold in the winter..

I have an "inexpensive" pair of breathables that I LOVE. I can put fleece pants on and be out in November and December all day and be warm. I can put shorts on under them in the summer and be very comfortable. Very easy to patch should the inevitable happen. I recommend them over neo's any day.

Gee, I read this whole thing differently, it is too bad that many local suppliers do a poor job that make us look to nationally based suppliers, who in turn may supply us with a product that may be made locally (Columbia, Luhr Jensen, Danner, etc.) I shop both, I am aware of quality, service, inventory and lastly price!
I have noticed Fisherman's slipping in inventory. I sure hope they don't add skiing equipment next

Ya know guys, I can't believe it.
My original post says I am disapointed about "guys" gushing over Cabellas and not supporting local merchants. "Disappointed", not mad, not huffy, not perturbed, not ready to fight, just disappointed.
I made no personal slams. Eastside did.
I made no mention of where one buys the majority of their goods. Eastside did.
I made no mention of what type of automobile one must have in his driveway. Eastsid did.
I made no speculation about how much one might or might not know about anything. Eastside did.
Yet, I am the one out of line here.
Excuse me for promoting local economy and supporters of local fishing efforts. That is all I did so there is nothing more for me to apologize for.
As for the comparison to OLive MoJO, yes your right... there are evidently those on this board that look for a reason to start a fight as well as there.
There is no other reason for such a reply as that I recieved from Eastside.

Jeeze Laweeze. Calm down folks. Everything is gonna be alright. We are a free people. God Bless America. WE can shop where we want to. Other countries don't even have the ability to go shopping. I would hope we could focus on caring about each other, helping each other, and enjoying the wonderfull Rivers/Fish/Mountains/Deer/Elk/Birdies/Forests/FAMILIES, that we have. Lets get back in the Real line, and enjoy life, and catch some winter steelhead. Enjoy. JP

STGRULE,
Mind if I ask where you got your "inexpensive" pair of breathables ( and what brand). I am looking to pick some up for my son for X-mas. What type of boot would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

Straydog, keep fighting the good fight! I am one who appreciates a local guy doing what he can to try and help our local situation. From your posts in the past, I would bet that you have personally done more for our fisheries than over 50% of the posters on ifish combined, myself included. Its easy to talk about wanting changes for the better, but it is rare to actually see people doing anything about it. Thanks again.

Fishing Freak:
I bought the Tidewater brand breathable waders from GI Joes two years ago. Because I work from a boat most of the time I got the neoprene booties that zip up the side to wear. They are warm and flexible. They're not slippery when they are wet either (good in the boat) I haven't had to do much walking on sharp rocks so the booties are nice. I've used them on the Columbia, Rouge, Willamette, and clamming on the beach. The breathable waders are great if you do alot of bending and stooping (like clamming). Being able to layer under them means your always comfortable too.

Thanks STGrule,
I give them a look!
