although i have made a few posts on the hunting page this will be my first on the fishing page.i have been reading this site for a while now. it is the best i have found.you guys seem to be a great bunch.with hunting trips to eastern or.for elk and deer in western or. and deer in maine i have not been fishing lately.but now it is time to go for some gators. now to the topic. my fishing partner found a flyer on his windshield about a sturg. derby dec. 15 from i-5 downstream.must be at the st johns landing at 3;30 to check in with fish. ten bucks to enter and longest fish gets 50% of the cash. dont remember who is putting it on exactly. something like jim and johns tavern on lombard.good enough reason to go fishing.can get more details if anyone is interested.maybe you all already know. great to finally post here.

I saw the flyer on Sunday, I know these are "Cold Blooded" animals, and I know that Sturgeon derbys are prone to some Fraud, but the note on the bottom of the flyer that states fish must be brought in alive and kickin ensures I won't be participating.
I know a bunch of people treat these fish like Bass and keep them alive and some with limited ethics may even "Trade-up" for larger fish. But personally, I can't buy it and won't. Find me a biologist that is OK with hanging a Sturgeon off of a rope for 6 hours and then releasing it, or a chef who likes their meat from a stressed animal.
Catch'em, Kill'em and Tag'em or Release them ASAP.

The flip side of that is the "son of a gillnetter" (insert witch with a B) who brings in limits of dead 60" keepers to claim the $1,500 in prizes.
I usually bleed sturgean after tagging them, fish the rest of the day, throw them in the boat for the trip back home and they are still moving after all of that. These are truly tough creatures.
