On a mercruiser, if you toast the impeller in the lower unit (which the general consensus estimates takes 5 seconds of blockage at the intake), does the capillary action of the water and the force of the water pump keep the flow going? For how long?

The reason I ask is because I'm in the middle of laying the boat up for the winter. The last time I was out, everything ran fine. Now, when I wasn't getting water through the motor, I discovered the impeller was fried. BTW I always turn the water on before I start the motor at home so that wasn't it.

Any thoughts?

Streetwalker,
I thought you were sleeping in your boat tonight. How'd you get the computer out there?

And the next question is " How much will it cost to have a stainless steel impeller installed". I have a boat that is very slow out of the hole and takes forever to get on a plain, or is it plane? Any how, I'm told changing to the other impeller helps a lot.
You should never show or tell the wife there was room for a sleeping bag on the floor of the boat..
