Guys & Gals, I have a nice TH custom rod (spinning rod rated 8-17#) with a nice Shimano Sustain reel. I was going to put Maxima line on the reel but the guy at fishermans told me that Berkeley ultragreen would have less memory and cast better. When I fished with the fairly fresh 15# line a few weeks ago it didn't cast worth a flip. The line had memory coils and these provided for too much drag going through the eyelets. Looking for suggestions on line type that will make the rod cast properly.

Thanks,

Dave

That same thing happend to me. Same line even.
I went and bought the new currado level wind and I totally love it. It's the smoothest casting reel i have ever used. For the spinning reel It took a couple of trips till it finally quit having loops. good luck.

For spinning setups, try some good old fashioned Stren.

15# Line might be a bit heavy for good casting. Stren or Trilene in 10# would be my choice, for steelies at least. Stay away from Magna-Thin for spinning.

Kilgore- If you can find it ( I usually order it out of Cablela's), try some P-line on your spinning reel. I've pretty well switched all mine over to it. It's strong, low stretch, and has low memory. 10# is about all I'd go on steelhead unless you're anticipating hooking into "grampa". Use 12# if you're nervous. I think you'll like the P-line!

Maxima Ultragreen for mono setups. Pretty much I have switched over to fireline (Braided) and tuff line (Braided) on most all setups. The braided lines are soft, limp and cast smooth. Mark fishes Maxima Ultragreen with mucilin on the line. If you insist on fishing mono I have tried all the "New" and "Imroved" lines and always go back to Maxima. It IS the best mono on the market. Most people dont like the price of Maxima and braided lines but what is worth more, Your time and frustration or a few bucks????????

Contrary to smj, I think stren magna-thin is the best spinning line you can buy. I run my spinning rods with 16# green for winters and 12lb for summers. The diameter is comparable to the next size down ultragreen and memory is almost non existent if spooled right. Use the ultragreen for leader and you have a nice setup. I have been using it for the last 4 years... Joe

I am going to second the vote for magna thin I find that it casts very well on my rod. the biggest problems I've found is I have to cut everything off after a fish and freespool(not respool) half the reel. I would suggest this to be done for anyone fishing a spinning reel after having drag pulled off, it really twists up your line. The abrasion resistance is not the greatest but I favor the lines limpness and castability over abrasion especially for jigs.
