looking for opinions here. yesterday i was fishing and at the end of the day i go to start my 1992 yama 85 2 stroke and as it is idleing i hear a alarm, but at the time i dont know what it is, so turn the motor off and turn the key back on and the alarm goes back on. after a few min i turn the key back on and the alarm goes off again but after a couple sec it goes off. i start the motor and try to get going and the alarm comes on again and i look behind me to see no water coming from the port. i shut down and run the kicker back to the ramp now i ran the motor for a total of 5 min while the alarm was going untill i relized what was up. other than i have a problem with the water pump/impellers,what other type of motor damage could have happened ie head gasget ? by the way it does still run and start but i dont know if i blew a gasget or somthing

Throw an impeller in it and see what happens.

Check the Tube between the Pump, & Engine also.
A compression test will probably tell you everything you need to know. I'd guess you are okay though. Those motors are pretty indestructible.
I have a 70hp 2-stroke Yamaha that is the little brother to your motor. I've had the overtemp alarm go off on my motor several times. The culprit for me has always been kelp or something else blocking the water inlet. The alarm goes off before any damage is done. But I've always shut down as soon as the alarm went off(within seconds) and I haven't run the motor again until it cooled down.
That alarm is very loud and unpleasant, how could you keep running for 5 minutes? Anyway, fix the water cooling problem...blockage or impeller or thermostat, then take it for a test drive. You'll probably know immediately. It will either run fine or it won't. If it doesn't, the next step is to pull the head and cross your fingers that it is only a warped head.
Or ... time for a new four stroke.... :twocents:
