Has anyone had problems with the power tilt going out. I want to put the 8hp on my lund. The extra money is not an issue but if it can go wrong it will happen to me. I read the owners manual on-line and it looks like if you have a problem you can still get the motor up manully but it looks like a pain.
Any imput would be great.
Thanks
Mike

I have had no problems with mine since 2004. But was on my buddys boat when his 2004 Yam T8 lost it's power tilt. Was an actual elec/hyd motor issue and the dealer repaired it but nearly ruined our weekend. Failures are pretty rare though from what I hear.

My power tilt is toast (2003 T-8) and the same thing happened to my buddy with his 2002. Replacement part was $800 for my buddy, I haven't replaced mine yet.
I love the engine but I wouldn't call tilt failures "rare" I'm afraid.

I have an 03 with 477 hours. The tilt did give me a problem but it was an pretty easy fix that cost zero dollars. If you do a search you will find a thread that explains it pretty well.
With the power tilt/E start motor you also get an alternator which is very nice if your running electronics or electric motor.
Although I have had a problem I love the hydraulic tilt. It would be hard to live without.

There are occasional issues.

I also started a thread a couple weeks ago about a service bulletin that warns not to use the knob to trailer your motor if you tow it in the up position. This may cause premature failure because it only locks 1 side. Other than that I feel its by far the best kicker on the market and love mine. I believe this is why mine failed. Mine is a 2006 and have run it at least 100 days. Nothing is perfect but the T8 is a joy to run.
Here's the service bulletin thread.

I am not sure if it true, but I heard from a few very knowledgeable guys that the 04+ T8s power tilt features fail a LOT less than the -04 year models. Not sure if that is true or not?

My buddys tilt that failed does use his lock pin when trailering. I do not and just leave it in the down position and have had no issues(so far).
Good info.

Deadstick, I really liked your post (I think yours was the one) and I did resurface the commutator and brushes and stretch the springs but it still didn't work. Looks like that's not a 100% fix unfortunately.

My 06 has been great so far, moved to the my-wedge for peace of mind thanks to all who post here, never much thought about it until then. Just did as the dealer suggested. Hello...My bad. Don't worry about it now on the trailer. still has to bear the weight while running on my boat.

I have an 02 or 03 T-8 extra long shaft with electric start ...it's a brute and heavy ..the tilt works fine and I wouldn't be without it ...fishing all day when you are running the big engine up stream and trolling down means raising and lowering the engine dozens of times ...that would be a back breaker after a while without the tilt

The electric tilt is great, but not without problems. Mine likes to raise itself..yes, all by itself. Still under warranty so a new switch is on the way.
I wouldn't be without it, however!
I tilt beats raising the motor up by hand twenty plus times a day.:meme:

Congrats,
almost all power tilts can be bled manually so you can lower the motor even when the unit fails.

My 06 acts up when it's below 30 degrees. All winter I have to cycle the tilt switch 5-6 times to get it fully lifted or lowered. "It's fine" says the local dealer. It's still on warranty, so I'll chase the problem next year.
