One of the most pleasing things about this year's elk hunting was the salmon viewing. As we trudged through every tiny remote creek bottom in the upper Nehalem drainage, we consistantly saw spawning salmon in all the right places!
And, more importantly, these creeks were running with an emerald green tint, even at flood stages. Finally, the trees have grown in thick down around Ford, Beaver, Fishhawk and other spawning bed creeks. This area had been clear cut right over the top of these streams just 15 years ago. The laws about riparian zones must have been a joke to the local loggers. But now, roots and green vegetation are holding the soil where it belongs, even with the heavy rains. And my guess is, the shade from this thick blanket of Re-prod is going to keep the water temp.s moderated while our little smolts grow and work their way back down to the salt!
So go ahead you lil' anadromous couples...do your thing. I promise not to watch. Besides, did you hear that alder branch snap? Lock & load...gotta go!
